The City of Vancouver is seeking innovative, functional and scalable solutions that will help eliminate the disposal of waste (solid and organic) to landfill and incinerator.

Zero Waste 2040 is a long-term strategic vision for Vancouver. The primary objective of the Plan is to eliminate the disposal of solid waste to landfill and incinerator by 2040, through alignment with an approach which includes, in order of priority:

Avoid the generation of waste and reduce the amount of waste that can’t be avoided.

Prioritize material reuse such as sharing, repurposing, repairing and refurbishing over recycling and disposal.

Increase the total amount of material recycled, reduce carbon emission by maximizing the recovery of inedible food and green waste for composting and renewable energy recovery.
