Anchorlight is pleased to announce the applications for the 2023 Brightwork Fellowship.
It is the intent of the program to demonstrate to artists living and working in North Carolina that they are valued, worthy of investment, and that the voice they bring to the cultural discourse of their state is a vital facet of North Carolina's identity. More than anything, this program intends to empower N.C. artists with the gift of time, space, and financial support to fully explore their creative potential.
Anchorlight does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, religion, gender expression, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship status, marital status, veteran status, medical conditions including HIV, or sensory, physical, or mental disability.

The Brightwork Fellowship provides a 500+ square-foot studio space at Anchorlight, an exhibition opportunity in their gallery.
Funding Information
An unrestricted financial award of $50,000.00 to one North Carolina based artist per year who is at a pivotal moment in their career.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be living in North Carolina for a minimum of one year at the time of application.
- The Brightwork Fellowship is a studio based residency. Therefore, only mediums that the Anchorlight studios can accommodate are eligible. Equipment or materials that produce fumes requiring special ventilation, smoke, fire, excessive dust, noise, or permanent damage to the facilities are not permitted.
- Visual Artists 18+ years of age, who have lived in North Carolina for a minimum of one year at the time of their application and who will continue living in North Carolina for the duration of the Fellowship may apply.
- Fellows are expected to be comfortable working in a building with other artist studios, workshops, and gallery events, and in a community atmosphere.

The program accepts artists who:
- Display obvious talent and individual vision.
- Are creating original work both in concept and production.
- Are generous, industrious, and creative thinkers.
- Are able to work and get along with a variety of other individuals in a semi-private studio environment.
- Demonstrate a commitment to their practice through an existing body of work.
Ineligibility
Applicants may not be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program during the time of their Fellowship. Applicants may be enrolled in such programs during the application process. Doctoral candidates that have finished all coursework may apply.
