Request for Proposals: India-Japan Cooperative Science Programme

UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences

Deadline: 03-Sep-2025

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, in partnership with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), is inviting applications for the India-Japan Cooperative Science Programme (IJCSP). This programme aims to promote bilateral scientific collaboration between Indian and Japanese researchers.

Eligible Indian scientists and researchers can submit proposals for Joint Research Projects and Joint Workshops or Seminars under this programme. The support covers several scientific areas including Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Life Science & Agriculture, Mathematics & Computational Science, Astronomy & Earth Science, and Materials & Engineering.

Funding is available to cover costs associated with the exchange of researchers. This includes international airfare, visa fees, airport taxes, overseas medical insurance, and airport transfers within India. For joint workshops or seminars organized in India, local travel costs for selected Indian participants and organizing expenses may also be supported according to DST norms. The projects can last up to two years, with researcher visits to be completed within one year and ten months.

Each application must include one Principal Investigator from India and one from Japan. Both PIs are responsible for the technical and administrative coordination of the project and for reporting to DST and JSPS. Indian Principal Investigators must be scientists or faculty members working full-time at universities, academic institutes, national research laboratories, or private non-profit institutions engaged in research and development. They should not be retiring or leaving their institution during the project’s duration.

Japanese Principal Investigators must be full-time researchers employed at JSPS-recognized universities or research institutions. Proposals must be drafted in English and refer to activities to be completed within the Executive Programme’s validity period. Each Principal Investigator may only submit one proposal.

Indian applicants who are involved in two or more ongoing projects funded by DST that will not be completed by March 31, 2026, are not eligible to participate. The proposals will be evaluated at the national level based on scientific relevance, methodology, qualifications of applicants, the added value of staff exchanges, and contribution to bilateral cooperation.

Applicants must submit duly completed application forms, curricula vitae of both research teams, and a letter of intent exchanged between the project coordinators.
