King Hussein Award for Cancer Research

Entries are now open for the King Hussein Award for Cancer Research to promote and celebrate cancer research efforts across the Arab world.

The Award will recognize leading Arab researchers – both established and promising – who are making outstanding contributions to the knowledge of cancer. The King Hussein Award aims to advance much needed cutting-edge research across the region, filling the gaps in the understanding of cancer in the Arab world, focusing on the study of the Arab gene and ultimately empowering life-saving treatment.

Award Categories

• Academic Program Excellence
  • The King Hussein Award’s category for ‘Academic Program Excellence’ recognizes academic programs in the field of cancer which are affiliated with or offered by a university, an academic institution, an accredited hospital, or an accredited cancer center in the Arab world.
  • The program must demonstrate its commitment to research, teaching, and/or training of future healthcare professionals.
• Lifetime Achievement
  • The King Hussein Award recognizes the pillars and pioneers who have played critical roles in both advancing regional research and the fight against cancer at the international level through its Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • This Award includes the following two tracks:
    • Regional (recognizing Arab researchers working in the region)
    • International (recognizing Arab researchers working outside of the region)
• Promising Researcher Grant
  • The King Hussein Award’s Promising Researcher Grant provides funding for two research proposals to be conducted in the Arab world by young promising researchers, in any discipline related to cancer. By funding selected projects in the amount of USD 100,000 over the course of two years, the Promising Researcher Grant endeavors to inspire a talented new generation of researchers and equip them with the necessary resources, structure and support to carry out cutting-edge research in the Arab world.
  • Special consideration will be given to proposals which address research questions specifically related to the incidence and/or manifestation of cancer in the Arab world.
• Young Investigator Award
  • The King Hussein Award’s Young Investigator Award recognizes investigators at the beginning of their careers (younger than 45) for their impactful and innovative contributions to cancer research. The Award includes the following two tracks:
    • Regional Track: Available to young investigators working in the region
    • International Track: Available to young investigators of Arab origin working abroad

Award Details

• Academic Program Excellence and Lifetime Achievement: Award of 30,000 USD
• Promising Researcher Grant: A grant of 100,000 USD
• Young Investigator Award: Award of 20,000 USD
• Recognition in the official Awarding Ceremony
• The King Hussein Award Plaque

Eligibility Criteria

• Academic Program Excellence
  • The program is engaged in the field of cancer and affiliated with a university/academic institution or an accredited hospital/cancer center in the Arab world.
  • The program has operated for a minimum of five years.
  • The program covers any/all of the following areas in the field of cancer: prevention/early detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, palliative/end-of-life care.
  • The program demonstrates commitment to ethical standards (IRB/REC approval, when applicable).
  • The program conducts community outreach/engagement and impact (activities for health education and awareness for the community).
  • When applicable, the academic program serves new cancer patients on a regular basis.
  • The program adheres to the requirements of accreditation and curriculum standard ratios (e.g. faculty/trainees ratio).
  • The program has well-defined organizational structure and is well-staffed.
  • The program has specific/published requirements for admission/enrollment/promotion and certification, as applicable.
• Lifetime Achievement
  • Conditions for Nominating
    • Individuals eligible to nominate candidates to the Lifetime Achievement Award shall meet the following conditions:
      • PhD or MD
      • 15 years active in research
      • Strong publication history
      • Declaration of institutional affiliation
  • Conditions for Nominees
    • Individuals nominated to the Lifetime Achievement Award must meet the following conditions:
      • Affiliated or previously affiliated (in case of retirement) with a reputable institution involved in cancer research.
      • Actively working in cancer research in the Arab world and/or internationally.
      • Demonstrated lifelong commitment to understanding and fighting against cancer.
      • MD, PhD, or MD/PhD or equivalent degree.
      • Demonstrated significant contributions by:
        • Improving prevention, diagnosis, or treatment.
        • Leadership, mentorship, and collaboration.
• Promising Researcher Grant
  • Eligible submissions to the Promising Researcher Grant shall meet the following conditions:
    • Research should be innovative, bold ideas and with the potential to have a big impact in any field/aspect of cancer.
    • Research to be implemented in the Arab world.
    • Researcher must reside in the Arab world and work in academic/research institutions, or hospitals in the Arab world for the fund duration.
    • Researcher should be 45 years old and younger.
• Young Investigator Award
  • Eligible submissions to the Young Investigator Award shall meet the following conditions:
    • Young investigator (age 45 and younger).
    • Applicant has impactful and innovative contributions to cancer research.
    • Previous winners of the Award may reapply after three years, provided that their application presents a research project other than that which was submitted in the previous submission(s).
    • Members of the Award Board are not eligible to apply to the Award during their term of service and for one-year after.
    • Evaluation Committee Members are not eligible to apply for any Award which their Committee is responsible for evaluating during their term of service.
    • Only one submission will be accepted per applicant per award cycle.
