Montenegro: Strengthening Medicine Prescription and Consumption Monitoring

2023 Health Equity Accelerator Awards (US)

Deadline: 19-Nov-2025

The European Commission has launched the project “Improvement of System Mechanisms for Monitoring the Prescription and Consumption of Medicines in the Health System of Montenegro” to strengthen the country’s public healthcare system.

The initiative focuses on introducing rational prescribing practices in line with European Union standards, helping Montenegro meet its obligations under Negotiation Chapter 1 – Free Movement of Goods and Chapter 28 – Consumer and Health Protection as part of the EU accession process.

The project will be implemented across Montenegro with a maximum duration of eight months for implementation and an additional three months for reporting. Backed by a total budget of EUR 250,000, the programme aims to establish more effective and transparent systems for monitoring medicine prescriptions and consumption, ultimately improving healthcare outcomes and patient safety.

Eligibility for this call is limited to Public Administrations and Mandated Bodies of European Union Member States, as defined by the EU Twinning Manual. Proposals must be submitted through the National Contact Points of EU Member States, ensuring the transfer of expertise and best practices to Montenegro.

By investing in this initiative, the European Commission seeks to modernize Montenegro’s health sector, enhance rational medicine use, and further align the country with EU standards in healthcare and consumer protection.
