The Sir Harcourt Caughey Award supports medical researchers and graduates to advance health, science, and medicine in New Zealand. Funding of up to $25,000 is available across three categories, enabling research-active graduates returning from overseas, medical graduates training internationally in specialist areas, and visiting experts to foster knowledge exchange in Auckland and Northland.

Overview

This award is administered by the Auckland Medical Research Foundation (AMRF) and aims to improve the health and quality of life for all New Zealanders by supporting high-quality medical research. Eligible host institutions include recognized tertiary institutions, Te Whatu Ora, Crown Research Institutes, and other approved sites in the greater Auckland and Northland region.

Award Categories

  1. Returning Graduate Support

    • For New Zealand graduates trained overseas, returning to a part-time appointment in Auckland

    • Supports researchers with sufficient experience to merit part-time support in their research

  2. Specialist Training Overseas

    • For New Zealand medical graduates in Auckland requiring support to train overseas in a specialist field

    • Enables undertaking research in the field while addressing local expertise gaps

  3. Visiting Expert Fellowship

    • For highly distinguished individuals in a specific medical field

    • Supports 3–4 week visits to Auckland to foster interest and advance research
