UNW and UNFPA have launched a joint call for proposals to strengthen the work of women human rights defenders in the prevention and response to violence against women and girls and gender-based violence in the context of COVID-19.
This call seeks an organization or a consortium of organizations that can collaborate with UN Women and UNFPA within the Regional Program of the Spotlight Initiative to strengthen the networks of women human rights defenders in the Latin American region in their work for the prevention and care of violence against women and femicides / feminicides in countries of Central America, Mexico, Bolivia and Peru.
All results are expected to focus on the emerging needs of women facing COVID-19 and the new challenges to prevent, address and punish violence against women and girls, as well as the needs of human rights defenders to be able to do its work against the “new normal.
Priority will be given to proposals submitted by consortia or networks of human rights defenders humans with grassroots presence and / or affiliation with organizations on the ground in countries of Central America, Mexico, Bolivia and Peru to have greater diversity and scope in activities proposals and results achieved, and proposals that promote the construction of regional networks and sub-regional or at the local level, the recovery and transfer of historical memory, from successful experiences, learning to enhance the influence and capacities of WHRDs in the region.
Time Frame
- The start date for the implementation of activities is August 2020 and the date of Completion is June 2021 subject to periodic review of progress and provision of services / results required.
Expected Results
- Protection systems, CSO resilience of the countries prioritized in this call for protect the rights of women, and other groups of defenders such as journalists and promoters / facilitators / carers for a life without violence for empowered women with an intersectional focus and with an emphasis on marginalized groups (indigenous women, women Afro-descendants, rural women, migrant, refugee and displaced women, women youth, women with disabilities, LGBTQI, among others)
- Strengthened capacities in identification, protection and response to violence against women at the territorial level with a community solidarity network approach.
- Strengthened capacities of grassroots women in advocacy and advocacy to ensure access to essential multisectoral services, including psychosocial, protection and care and access to justice and in the monitoring of cases of violence against women
- Strengthened capacities to drive changes / improvements in reforms in laws, policies and prevention and response strategies to violence against women and girls in the countries prioritized. As well as in international and regional spaces (conference on women, CSW, Beijing plus 25, anniversary of Security Council Resolution 1325) with a focus on the participation of WHRDs in defining responses to COVID-19 and in recovery plans to ensure prioritization of women’s needs, and prevention and care for VAW, as well as in strategic spaces in connection with measures to respond to the pandemic and the prevention of conflicts and violence within the framework of the socio-economic impact of the crisis.
Eligibility Criteria
- The organizations that apply must be legally established.
- At least 5 years of verifiable experience in the areas of women’s rights and prevention and response to violence against women in at least one country in Latin America.
- Proven credibility in the country or region, especially working in defense or promotion of women’s rights, prevention of violence against women and girls, gender-based violence and gender equality.
- Verifiable experience in working with CSO networks and coalitions and in conducting successful trainings on advocacy, advocacy and communication towards the elimination of violence against women and girls.
- Experience and / or background in advocacy tasks, incidence in laws and policies that affect women and girls.
- Experience in promoting compliance with international commitments related to women’s rights (Beijing +25, ICPD + 25, CEDAW, Belén do Pará, Montevideo Consensus of Population and Development, women’s agenda, peace and security, among others).
- Evidence of the organizational culture of responsibility, such as a written code of conduct, anti-corruption measures and sexual harassment policy.
- Previous experience and experience in the successful management of projects of the same nature and a history of timely delivery and quality of project results.
- A framework and internal control process in place to deliver quality results and timely of the project.
- Evidence that the organization has a grassroots presence and / or affiliation with strong organizations on the ground, especially those of marginalized groups or groups facing multiple forms of violence.
