The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is currently accepting proposals for the Judgments Award 2023.
The Judgments Award: access to justice for migrants, refugees, and other persons’ subject to international protection seeks to make visible the judgments that have been issued under the highest norms and standards in human rights, as well as good practices to ensure access to justice and the effective enjoyment of the human rights of migrants, refugees, and persons subject to international protection in the Americas.
Award Details
- The jury will offer awards to four submissions and grant them:
- First place: Diploma and statuette.
- Second place: Diploma and statuette.
- Thirds place: Diploma and statuette.
- “Honor Roll Mentions” may be awarded to decisions that may not have won an award, but are worthy of recognition due to their argumentative quality or merits.
- Likewise, “An Acknowledgement” may be granted to the organization or litigant whose legal actions and arguments were incorporated into the respective decision, that contributed to improve access to justice for migrants and people with international protection needs.
- The first three places will also be awarded:
- Public recognition during the awards ceremony.
- Distribution of the decision subject of the award on the websites of all the organizers.
- Publication of the decisions or an abstract of them in the records of Recognition of Judgments 2023, which will be widely circulated throughout the continent.
- The possibility of participating in regional forums and presenting the awarded proposals.
Criteria
- Decisions must have been handed down by a judge, magistrate or collegiate judicial body (not restricted to the Judicial Branch) of any country in the Americas.
- Individuals, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and justice providers may participate in the competition by proposing and submitting decisions. Only in the first three cases (decisions submitted by individuals, non-governmental organizations or academic institutions), the justice provider who rendered the decision will be informed that it has been proposed for consideration of the jury to receive the award.
- Any kind of decisions will be admissible for consideration regardless of procedural status. The evaluation and eventual award of a decision that is not final and subject to appeal does not bind nor will have an effect on future proceedings.
- All personal data of the parties involved in the case must be omitted; submitted decisions should contain public information according to the rules on transparency and access to information in the countries in which they were rendered.
- The award will be granted to the justice provider that rendered the decision.
- Decisions must have been handed down in English or Spanish or, if it is not the case, be submitted for consideration with a translation to English or Spanish.
