Nominations are now open for the 2020 Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Award, recognizing an individual who has made and/or continues to make a meaningful contribution to advancing and furthering human rights in Newfoundland and Labrador.
This year’s award will be presented on Thursday, December 10th, 2020 in celebration of International Human Rights Day. Due to Covid-19, the award ceremony will be held virtually this year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Nominees must have made and/or continue to make a meaningful contribution to advancing and furthering human rights in Newfoundland and Labrador. Examples include: taking action to combat discrimination and/or other infringements of human rights; increasing awareness of human rights; and, promoting the dignity and worth of people in the province.
- Nominees may have made a meaningful contribution to human rights in either a work or volunteer capacity.
- Nominees should recognize the rich diversity of people in Newfoundland and Labrador.
- All forms must be completed, submitted and received by the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission no later than October 31, 2018.
- Please ensure that the nomination form is complete and has enough information on it about the nominee so that the Selection Committee can properly evaluate the nomination. Nominators should be prepared to speak to the nominees’ human rights activities, how they have promoted human rights, equality and inclusion and the impact their work has made.
- If you would like to complete the nomination form in an alternative format, such as an interview, or have questions about the nomination process, please contact the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission. Documents are available in alternate format upon request.
- All nomination forms will be assessed on the basis of the information provided therein.
- A nominee can be living or deceased.
- Nominations are open to any person who is currently or has been a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Once nominations close, the Selection Committee will develop a shortlist of candidates, up to a maximum of 8 people. The award winner will be chosen from this shortlist.
- The Selection Committee reserves the right to assess previous nominations from past years and add those nominations to the current year’s shortlist.
- The choice of the award winner is at the full discretion of the Selection Committee and is final.
- The award winner must be available to travel to St. John’s for the award ceremony.
- The costs of travel and accommodation for one night for the award winner and a guest will be provided.
