The New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) is inviting applications for the Newell Flather Award for Leadership in Public Art 2022.
They launch the nomination process for the 2022 Newell Flather Award for Leadership in Public Art, they want to take a moment to honor the life and legacy of the late Newell Flather (1938-2021).
At NEFA they also believe that public art has the power to inspire more just, vibrant, and welcoming public spaces and public life; through the Newell Flather Leadership Award in Public Art, they hope to celebrate and lift up leaders, artists, and arts administrators in the field who are helping their live into these new realities.
Program Goals
- Invest in artists and the creative process. Foster public art practices that are dynamic and aesthetically impactful, and authentically honor the integrity of the people, places, stories, and ideas that are engaged in the process and presentation of the artmaking.
- Cultivate artists as civic leaders. Support public art that positions artists to directly inspire, disrupt and engage the public sphere to strive for greater equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in our public culture.
- Strengthen a community of practice by fostering partnerships that facilitate knowledge building and sharing to support the evolving field of public art throughout the New England region.
Funding Information
- Each recipient is awarded $5,000 of unrestricted funds in celebration of their extraordinary service.
Nomination Criteria
- This year aim to continue this tradition, as they seek nominees who:
- Reside full-time and work within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Create/Curate/Support public art that aligns with NEFA’s public art vision and values.
- Help their to see, feel, experience, and imagine more just futures for the public spaces and public culture.
- Address the intersectionality of spatial justice and racial justice as critical to cultivating a more vibrant public art ecosystem.
- Recognize the importance of context in public artmaking.
- Inspire more just, vibrant, and welcoming public spaces and public life in Massachusetts.
- Demonstrate a deep connection to place—encompassing both folks from a place as well as folks who have relocated and made deep connections to a place—and commitment to community building through public art.
