The Fund-a-Farmer Welfare Improvement Grants program supports small and mid-sized farms in enhancing the well-being of their animals and improving the sustainability of their operations.
Through this initiative, FACT will award approximately 60 grants of $3,500 each to eligible farmers who are working to strengthen animal welfare practices on their farms. The program is designed to help farmers make meaningful, long-term improvements in how animals are raised, housed, and managed.
Farmers may apply for funding to undertake projects that enhance the daily lives of their animals. This may include transitioning to or expanding pasture-based systems, improving animal housing, or implementing infrastructure that allows animals to express natural behaviors more freely. Farmers do not need to be pursuing certification to apply for this category, as the emphasis is on supporting practical improvements at the farm level.
The program also offers grants to farmers who are seeking to achieve or maintain recognized animal welfare certifications. Supported certification programs include Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World, Certified Humane, and steps 4 to 5+ of the Global Animal Partnership Animal Welfare Certified program. These grants may support infrastructure upgrades, management changes, or practices required to meet certification standards. Additionally, certified farmers may apply for assistance with developing marketing, sales, and distribution strategies that help bring higher-welfare products to consumers.
Through these funding opportunities, the program aims to foster healthier farming systems, support high-welfare production practices, and help farmers increase the market viability of their products. By prioritizing both on-farm improvements and expanded access to welfare-certified markets, the grants contribute to stronger rural economies and better conditions for farm animals.
