Deadline: 31-May-2026
The Falling Walls Lab Competition is an international platform for presenting innovative ideas, scientific research, and breakthrough solutions in a short three-minute pitch. It is designed to highlight ideas that can create meaningful impact in science, technology, academia, and society. Participants are encouraged to demonstrate how their work addresses important global or local challenges.
Key Focus Areas
The competition welcomes innovation across all disciplines, including science, engineering, social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary research. It emphasizes scientific breakthroughs, research-driven solutions, and ideas with strong social impact. The core theme is “breaking walls,” meaning overcoming barriers in knowledge, technology, or societal systems.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of application. They must be either currently enrolled as university students or early-career professionals. Eligibility also includes recent graduates: Bachelor’s degree completed within the last 10 years, Master’s degree within 7 years, or PhD within 5 years. Medical degrees follow specific equivalency rules, where an MD without a dissertation is treated as a Master’s level and a Dr. med. with dissertation is treated as PhD level.
Application Rules
Applicants must apply to the Falling Walls Lab closest to their location. Applications must be submitted individually, as group submissions are not allowed. All submissions must be in English. Only one application per participant is permitted, and previous participants are not eligible to apply again. No entry ticket is required for international Labs, and travel costs are not covered by the organizers.
Competition Format
Participants present their idea in a strict three-minute pitch format. The presentation focuses on clarity, innovation, and potential impact rather than long technical explanations. Selected participants compete at local Labs, and winners may advance to international final stages.
What Makes a Strong Submission
Strong applications demonstrate originality, clear problem-solving, and measurable impact. Ideas should be easy to understand within a short time frame and show potential to influence science or society. Interdisciplinary approaches and real-world applicability are highly valued.
Why the Competition Matters
The competition provides a global platform for emerging researchers and professionals to showcase breakthrough ideas. It helps connect innovators with academic, scientific, and industry networks. It also encourages early-stage innovation by giving visibility to ideas that could lead to real-world change.
Conclusion
The Falling Walls Lab Competition is a global stage for young innovators to present high-impact ideas in a concise and compelling format. By supporting breakthrough thinking across disciplines, it encourages solutions that address scientific and societal challenges. The program helps early-career researchers gain visibility and connect with international innovation ecosystems.
