Call for EOIs: Strengthening Livelihoods in Zambia

EIT: Public Engagement Call 2023 - Proof of Concepts

Deadline: 17-Sep-2025

The World Food Programme (WFP) is launching a new initiative in Zambia aimed at tackling food security, nutrition, and resilience in some of the country’s most vulnerable regions.

Focused on the Western, Southern, and North-Western provinces, the program seeks to support communities struggling with recurring droughts and other challenges that threaten both livelihoods and nutrition.

The initiative covers a broad range of sectors, including disability and inclusion, early recovery, and gender equality, alongside targeted efforts in nutrition and protection. By taking a cross-sectoral approach, WFP aims to address both immediate needs and the underlying causes of food insecurity, while ensuring that no one is left behind.

The first expected outcome is enhanced agricultural production and productivity. This will be achieved through the adoption of sustainable, regenerative, and climate-resilient farming and livestock practices. By promoting innovative techniques that ensure year-round food production, the program will help improve soil health, safeguard ecosystems, and boost household nutrition and income.

A second outcome is to strengthen livelihood resilience and stabilize incomes. Communities will benefit from improved access to affordable and profitable opportunities in value addition, as well as predictable and structured markets. These changes will enable smallholder farmers to secure fair returns for their produce while building long-term resilience to economic and environmental shocks.

The third outcome focuses on improving nutrition and diet diversity in drought-affected households. By increasing the production and consumption of diverse, nutrient-rich foods, families will be better able to meet their nutritional needs. This effort is particularly important in rural areas, where diets are often limited and highly vulnerable to climate-related disruptions.

Through this initiative, WFP aims to deliver an integrated and sustainable response that addresses food security challenges while advancing gender equality, inclusion, and community protection. By supporting smallholder farmers and vulnerable groups in Zambia, the program seeks to strengthen resilience, reduce malnutrition, and lay the foundation for healthier and more secure livelihoods.
