Kenya: NGO Council criticizes Kiambu County against the move

NGOs

The NGO Council of Kenya has strongly criticized the Kiambu County against the motion they passed last week to compel public and private companies to employ 70 per cent of their staff from the local community. The council has strictly ordered the country to abrogate the motion as the move does not support nationalism and patriotism.

According to Council Chair Stephen Cheboi, “While the idea might look good for the locals residents, it does not promote integration among Kenyans.”

The council asserts that rather than making it a law, country has to look for alternative ways of approaching the matter. The county assembly unanimously passed the motion by Majority leader Anthony Ikonya on December 15.

According to Section 65 (1)(e), in selecting candidates for appointment, the County Public Service Board shall consider the need to ensure that at least 30 per cent of the vacant posts at entry level are filled by candidates who are not from the dominant ethnic community in the county.

The NGOs council also raised a red flag in the number in the deaths reported in December alone as a result of road accidents. They urged drivers to be cautious on the road.

“We urge the police to deal firmly with tragic law offenders as way of reducing road accidents. We call on urgent Measures to ensure our Major and busy roads are dual carriage” Cheboi added.

They also want the government to consider banning night travel and reduction of speed to 50km per hour by Public service Vehicles (PSV) vehicles during the festive season.
