Malaysia: Organise Programmes to Encourage Women, NGOs Urged

Harvard LEAD Fellowship for Promoting Women in Global Health

In an effort to encourage the group especially those in rural areas, women based non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have been urged to organise more programmes in the future. During the event, a total of 150 less fortunate children received school necessities in conjunction with Jeiwa – Unilife 151 Give Back To The Community Initiative.

Women Development Department director-general Datuk Yatimah Sarjiman said, “Such programmes would become a platform to provide a positive change for the affected group. Previously, victims of domestic violence cases such as those dealing with abusive husbands, often face financial difficulties and suffer in silence. Programmes that are related to raising awareness on the related issues had helped many women to overcome their fear by seeking solutions to their problems.”

Yatimah further said, “Since January to March this year, about 1,500 police reports on violence against women were made, while about 5,000 reports had been lodged throughout 2016. This proves that more women are more aware of the importance of raising awareness on such cases, especially those who are victims of abuse in marriage.”

Yatimah also lauded Jeiwa for their achievements since being establishment on Oct 22, 2015, with a total of 63 programmes and activities organised for the selected group. She said, “I hope other organisations nationwide will follow in the footsteps of Jeiwa, in an effort to raise awareness on the importance of helping women.”

She then urged all women-based NGOs in the country to play their part in spreading awareness among the group, in an effort to encourage women to be braver in dealing with such problems.
