Deadline: 23-Sep-2025
The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research is offering grants to US-based researchers who want to return to Sweden to continue and develop their research at a Swedish university. This opportunity, called the SSF Individual Grants 2025 Ingvar Carlsson Award – Across the Atlantic, targets researchers currently employed in American academia with a connection to Sweden, such as active or previous Swedish citizenship or a master’s or doctoral degree from a Swedish higher education institution.
The goal of the program is to support these researchers in repatriating to Sweden, enabling them to advance their research in a Swedish academic setting. The grant provides 15 million kronor to fund a five-year research period at a Swedish university or college.
To be eligible, applicants must hold a tenure-track or tenured position at an American academic institution when applying. They must prove their Swedish connection with relevant documents, such as citizenship or educational diplomas. The Swedish institution that will host the researcher must provide a letter of intent confirming the offer of a tenured position, such as professor or associate professor, with at least 80% employment during the grant period.
Applicants should have an academic age between 7 and 12 years since earning their PhD. Adjustments for parental leave, sick leave, or clinical internships may be applied to extend this timeframe. The research must fall within the Foundation’s focus areas of Natural Sciences, Engineering, or Medicine. The grant will be administered by the Swedish host institution.
Applications must include a detailed research plan outlining the research challenge, milestones, current and planned collaborators, research environment, and the project’s strategic relevance to Sweden. The evaluation will consider the quality and originality of the research, its strategic importance to Swedish industry or society, and the applicant’s qualifications, including international experience and leadership skills.
The full application is submitted electronically and should include the research plan, strategic relevance, letter of intent from the Swedish institution, documents confirming Swedish connection and academic age, the applicant’s CV and selected publications, and a budget.
