Deadline: 24-Oct-2025
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is seeking expressions of interest from Australian academics to be appointed as Visiting Legal Fellows.
The program’s focus areas include delivering an international law lecture to the department, participating in at least two closed workshops with departmental staff on your areas of expertise and experience, meeting with legal and policy advisers across the department relevant to your expertise and areas of research, and participating in other activities such as joining an Australian delegation.
Through this call for expressions of interest, the department intends to appoint two Visiting Legal Fellows for 2026-2027. Eligible applicants must be academics at an Australian university working on international law. As a Visiting Legal Fellow, participants will have a unique opportunity to share their knowledge with departmental staff, contribute to the development of policy discussions, and engage directly with legal and policy advisers.
The duration of the appointment will be 24 months, providing sufficient time to make a meaningful contribution to both the department and the broader field of international law. Participation in the program is self-funded; however, for academics not based in Canberra, the department may reimburse reasonable travel expenses for up to three trips to the capital.
Academics interested in applying must submit an expression of interest that includes a statement of mutual benefit (no more than 500 words), a biography (no more than 150 words), and a Curriculum Vitae (no more than three pages). EOIs must be submitted by 6pm AEDT on Friday, 24 October 2025.
