The Peter Laing Agriculture Trust Grants are designed to assist people who intend to follow a practical farming career.

The aim of the call is to allow partners to collaborate internationally, and gain access to new research environments, facilities, knowledge, and expertise in order to enhance the quality of their research. The grants are designed to assist people obtain practical training for entry into the agricultural industry (e.g. through a cadet scheme, or certificate; diploma level of study) or alternatively, for those commencing their first farm employment and requiring dogs, or specialist equipment such as a saddle.

These grants are intended to support individuals with a genuine commitment to pastoral farming and a clear, well-planned career path within the industry. Applicants must either reside in the Wairarapa region or demonstrate strong links to it. The initiative targets people aiming to build a practical farming career rather than pursuing university-level studies.

A strong desire to expand agricultural knowledge, initiative to grow within the sector, and readiness to act as an ambassador for the Trust are key expectations. Successful applicants are also required to attend the annual awards function as part of their engagement with the Trust.

All applications must be submitted using the approved application form within the designated timeframe. The Peter Laing Agriculture Trust will review applications, conduct interviews if necessary, and determine the suitability of applicants for the grants. The Masterton District Council will advertise the grants and manage the application process each year.
