Age & Opportunity’s Arts programme invites applications for three awards intended to support the development of older artists in Ireland and to increase the knowledge around the arts and ageing in general: the Creative Ageing Writing Bursary, Professional Development Artist Award and Emerging Artist Award.
Categories
- Creative Ageing Writing Bursary 2023
- Launched in 2021, the Age & Opportunity Creative Ageing Writing Bursary aims to generate discussion, debate and knowledge about the arts and ageing in Ireland. The bursary is intended to afford time and space for an artist, writer, or arts worker to reflect on their practice or ideas as they relate to the arts and ageing. For artists, this reflection can include the learnings, insights but also challenges the artist has faced as they have gotten older or as they have gained more experience in their work with older people. For writers who are interested in contributing to thinking about this sector, they may wish to write more generally about the arts and ageing. Arts worker may wish to write about their experiences working with older people.
- The essay is intended to be useful for people who work with or are thinking of working with older people (including older artists), while generating discussion and debate about this area of work.
- The bursary is intended to afford time and space for either:
- An artist/writer/arts worker to reflect on their practice/work as they have aged – the learnings, insights but also challenges they have faced;
- An artist/writer/arts worker who has a lot of experience of working with older people and wishes to reflect on their learnings and insights over the years.
- Professional Development Artist Award 2023
- Age & Opportunity recognises that artistic practice is a lifelong journey and demands continued upskilling and training.
- The Age & Opportunity Professional Development Artist Award aims to celebrate lifelong learning by encouraging and supporting professional older artists who wish to further develop their career and practice through specific activities to meet their development needs (training, research, etc.). It is not intended to support formal third or fourth level education. The award also aims to publicly demonstrate the value of older artists.
- Examples of Professional Development opportunities might include:
- Creative development supports, such as participation in workshops, specialist courses, master classes, research projects, residencies, coaching/mentoring, attendance at conferences/seminars;
- Career development supports, such as strategic and/or financial planning, promotional, presentation or digital skills, proposal writing.
- Emerging Artist Bursary
- Age & Opportunity recognises that many people don’t have the time or resources to take up artistic practice when they are younger. For these artists, getting older enables a freeing up of responsibilities, allowing more time for pursuing existing and new artistic interests.
- The Age & Opportunity Emerging Artist Bursary aims to encourage and support older artists who are at an early stage in their career. They would like to celebrate the determination and achievements of someone in the second half of their life who has embarked on a full-time artistic path with a view to becoming a professional artist. The award also aims to publicly demonstrate the value of older artists.
- The Bursary is specifically intended to afford time and space for an outstanding emerging artist to develop their practice through buying time to work, (including materials). It is their hope that this Bursary would lead to a presentation at Bealtaine 2023/2024, although they recognise that this may not be possible in all cases.
