The Government of Canada has announced the applications for Celebration and Commemoration Program to provide funding to eligible recipients for initiatives that commemorate or increase awareness of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and of the history and legacy of residential schools.
Objectives
The Celebration and Commemoration Program is comprised of two components: Celebrate Canada and Commemorate Canada. The Program aims to:
- provide access to celebrations across Canada to enable all Canadians to appreciate Canada’s cultural, ethnic, linguistic and geographic diversity;
- provide access to commemorations and celebrations of national significance to all Canadians to recognize Canada’s notable people, places, symbols, anniversaries and accomplishments; and
- create opportunities for all Canadians to participate in national celebrations and commemorations that contribute to building a sense of pride and belonging to Canada.
Funding Information
- Amount: up to a maximum of $10,000
- The duration of your project cannot exceed 12 months and must be completed by October 15, 2022.
Eligible projects
To be eligible for funding your project must meet at least 1 of the following objectives:
- increase awareness and commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and/or the history and legacy of residential schools
- honour children who did not return home, survivors, their families and communities
- provide an opportunity for survivors, families and communities to share their stories and advance inter-generational healing and reconciliation
Non-eligible projects
- projects related to research activities for burial locations (surveying, archeological work);
- upkeep of cemeteries;
- relocation of individuals from burial sites to final resting places; and
- capital construction and major renovation.
Eligibility Criteria

The following organizations are eligible for funding:
- Indigenous governments, band councils or tribal councils, or their delegated authorities
- Indigenous not-for-profit organizations or groups
- organizations, including Survivor groups, demonstrating a close working partnership with and directed by Indigenous-governed organizations
- for profit Indigenous organizations, provided that the project for which they are requesting funding will not result in income generation for their sole benefit
- Indigenous-led institutions including accredited programs
- in exceptional circumstances to be approved by the program, non-Indigenous organizations, in close partnership with Indigenous organizations

The following organizations are not eligible:
- private individuals and political parties
- federal departments, their institutions and portfolio agencies
