Programme Overview

The IDFA Bertha Fund (IBF) offers financial support to filmmakers from IBF Classic Countries, facilitating the production and post-production of impactful documentary films. The grant aims to:

  • Support original and urgent storytelling from underrepresented regions

  • Promote filmmaker vision and creativity

  • Enhance global visibility of selected films through screenings and premieres

Grant Details

  • Maximum Funding: €25,000 per project

  • Eligible Applicants:

    • Director and main producer must reside and work in an IBF Classic Country

    • Co-producers from non-IBF countries may participate as equal or minority partners

  • Eligible Projects: Films in production or post-production

    • Pre-production projects must provide a research/fundraising teaser or plan

    • Post-production projects must submit a rough cut or edited sequence of up to 20 minutes

  • Submissions: Audiovisual materials must have English subtitles and be accessible via a link (e.g., Vimeo/YouTube) without login or download requirements

  • Deadline 2026: February 10

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  1. Project Information:

    • Basic details, crew list, logline (≤50 words), synopsis (≤400 words)

    • Project description (≤1,500 words)

    • Topic summary/motivation (≤1,000 words) or director video

    • Biography & filmography of director(s) and producer(s)

    • Project stage, timeline, and implementation plan (≤200 words)

    • Link to audiovisual material

  2. Audiovisual Material:

    • Production: trailer, demo, or edited sequence (3–20 minutes)

    • Post-production: rough cut or edited selection (~20 minutes)

  3. Pre-Selection & Final Application:

    • Pre-selection notification within 8 weeks of submission

    • Pre-selected projects must submit detailed budget, finance plan, and production schedule within one week

    • Final selection decisions announced within 3 months of deadline

Assessment Criteria

Applications are evaluated based on:

  • Strength and originality of treatment

  • Originality and urgency of story

  • Director’s vision and ability

  • Financial feasibility

  • Recognition of IBF support, including:

    • IDFA Bertha Fund logo on final credits and publicity materials
