Applications Open for 2019 UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation

Sustainable Communities Challenge in Ireland

Applicants are invited to apply for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation. The objective of the Prize is in conformity with UNESCO’s policies and is related to the Programme of the Organization in the field of environment, natural resources and education for sustainable development.

The purpose of the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation is to afford recognition to outstanding contributions by individuals, groups of individuals, institutes or organizations who have contributed to environmental and natural resources research, environmental education and training, creation of environmental awareness through the preparation of environmental information materials and activities aimed at establishing and managing protected areas including in relation to sustainable tourism, such as Biosphere Reserves, natural World Heritage sites and UNESCO Global Geoparks.

This prize is intended to honor individuals, groups of individuals, institutes or organizations that have made significant contributions to environmental conservation. It will be awarded for the 15th time at a ceremony that will take place during the World Science Forum in Budapest (Hungary), from 20 to 23 November 2019.

Prize Information

Presented every two years, the prize consists of a certificate and a financial award from a donation graciously made by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said of Oman and the Government of Oman, which is 2019 has been increased to $100,000. The prize-winner(s) is (are) selected based on the recommendations made by the Jury of the prize.
