Applications are open for the Green Gown Awards for UK and Ireland that offer unique brand integrity and recognition to senior management in the tertiary education sector.
The awards seek to o inspire excellence, enhance collaboration and to encourage replication of sustainability projects.
The judging criteria will be based on the project as a whole, with the ultimate deciding factor being which project has the biggest scale of impact (dissemination, replication, within and outside of the sector, national and international reach).
Organization Categories
- Best Newcomer: those institutions that are starting their sustainability journey including institutions that have not been a finalist before.
- Built Environment: Recognizing new or refurbished buildings or student residences in tertiary education which have good energy and environmental performance.
- Carbon Reduction: Recognizing initiatives which have achieved significant reductions in the carbon footprint of an institution through the likes of:Energy consumption and source; Waste reduction, recycling and responsible disposal; Sustainable travel planning and management.
- Community – inclusion in the International Green Gown Award: initiatives by tertiary education institutions which create significant benefits for local communities, disadvantaged groups (including disability and accessibility in the broader sense) and/or society as a whole in either the UK (or host country) or developing countries.
- Continuous Improvement: Institutional Change – inclusion in the International Green Gown Awards: Recognizing sustained and successful activities to improve the performance of tertiary education institutions, faculties and buildings over a number of years and offers a whole institution approach.
- Enterprise and Employability: Recognizing social, social media, sustainable enterprise, and financial sustainability and employability skills as key ingredients of contemporary education to ensure a supply of education leavers who can rise to the 21st century’s economic, environmental and social challenges.
- Facilities and Services: Recognizing facility and service excellence across an institution and how sustainability aspects are embedded throughout.
- Food and Drink: This category includes all food, drink and hospitality aspects of institutions. It will be expected that standard credentials will usually be in place (such as Food for Life Catering Mark; free-range eggs; Fairtrade; seasonal and local food; Marine Stewardship Council; food waste etc.).
- Learning and Skills: Recognizing achievement in the development of academic courses, skills and capabilities relevant to sustainability.
- Research and Development (Institution – REVISED FOR 2016): Recognizing the importance of research and development by tertiary education as a driver of sustainable development.
- Research and Development (Student – NEW FOR 2016): Recognizing excellent student research that progress the field of sustainability.
- Student Engagement – inclusion in International Green Gown Award: Recognizing the importance of research and development by tertiary education as a driver of sustainable development.
- Sustainability Reporting – NEW FOR 2016: This Award aims to assess the quality and relevance of sustainability reporting offered throughout the publicly available information provided by institutions.
Individual Categories
- Sustainability Champion Award: Recognizing people whose involvement has made a positive impact be that on their peers, their institution, their students, their local community or their local workforce.
- Sustainability Professional Award: Recognizing people at any level (except Executive level, please submit under the Leadership Award) who have worked hard at pushing boundaries and are doing exemplary work.
- Leadership Award: Recognizing individuals’ at the most senior level in institutions and those operating alongside them in senior leadership team positions including institutional governance.

- Interested applicants can download the application forms via given website.
- The Green Gown Awards is a two stage application process. Stage 1 involves a short application form. A panel of sector experts will assess these to produce a list of finalists for each category. These finalist entries will then be invited to submit a fuller application for stage 2.
