The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking applications for “People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Student Design Competition” to design solutions for a sustainable future.
EPA considers projects that address challenges from a wide range of categories including water, energy, agriculture, built environment, and materials and chemicals. The competition has two phases:
- For the first phase of the competition, teams are awarded a $15,000 grant to develop their idea.
- They showcase their research in April at the National Sustainable Design Expo as part of the competition for an additional grant of up to $75,000 to apply their design to a real world application.
Eligibility Criteria
- Institutions of higher education located in the United States are eligible to apply as the recipients of grants to support teams of undergraduate and/or graduate students.
- Collaboration and partnerships with colleges and universities outside the United States are permitted (and up to 40% of the grant can be contracted to an international partner), but only U.S. institutions are eligible to apply.
- Applicants (both student team members and faculty advisors) must be citizens of the United States or its territories, or be lawfully admitted to the United States.
- Students must be enrolled in the college, university or post-secondary educational institution they will be representing.
- Interdisciplinary teams, including representatives from multiple engineering departments and/or departments of chemistry, architecture, industrial design, business, economics, policy, social science and others are encouraged to apply.
