Applicants are invited to submit applications for Pathway to Canada Target 1 Challenge which is part of Canada’s Nature Fund.
It will leverage provinces and territories, Indigenous people and the private and non-profit sectors to collaborate towards making significant progress in meeting the terrestrial elements of Target 1 of Canada’s 2020 Biodiversity Goals and Targets. Target 1 states: “By 2020, at least 17% of terrestrial areas and inland water, and 10% of coastal and marine areas, are conserved through networks of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures.” Proponents from across the public and private sectors, as well as provinces, territories and indigenous organizations are encouraged to submit applications for conservation activities that complement and contribute to Target 1.
Objectives
- The Pathway to Canada Target 1 Challenge is a four-year, open call for proposals. Through this call for proposals, selected projects will lead to the direct establishment of Protected and Conserved areas, or Indigenous Protected and Conserved areas.
- The Pathway to Canada Target 1 Challenge will also incentivize new and innovative approaches to achieving Target 1.
- The call for proposals will be informed by advice provided by the National Advisory Panel, the Indigenous Circle of Experts, foundations who have expressed an interest in aligning resources with Canada’s commitment to Target 1, discussion with federal/provicnial/territorial and Indigenous governments, local governments, and non-profit organizations under the Pathway to Canada Target 1.
- The Fund is administered by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Priorities
- The proposed size of new Protected and Conserved Areas (i.e., contribution to coverage)
- Develop and establish Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas
- Contribution to ecological integrity and connectivity
- Economic and cultural benefits and
- Co-benefits to species at risk and addressing climate change
Eligible Projects
Projects should contribute directly to, or support, enhanced coverage, ecological integrity and connectivity of Canada’s network of protected and conserved areas, and Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas.
Eligible Applicants
- Eligible recipients for Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas include:
- provincial and territorial governments
- domestic Indigenous organizations, governments, individuals, boards, commissions, communities, associations and authorities, including:
- Indigenous not-for-profit organizations
- district councils, Chiefs councils and Tribal councils
- Indigenous research, academic and educational institutions
- Indigenous for-profit organizations
- domestic not-for-profit organizations, such as charitable and volunteer organizations, professional associations, and non-governmental organizations
- Eligible recipients for other Protected and Conserved Areas include:
- domestic or international not-for-profit organizations, such as charitable and volunteer organizations, professional associations, and non-governmental organizations
- domestic or international Indigenous organizations, governments, individuals, boards, commissions, communities, associations and authorities, including:
- Indigenous not-for-profit organizations
- district councils, Chiefs councils and Tribal councils
- Indigenous research, academic and educational institutions and
- Indigenous for-profit organizations
- domestic or international research, academic and educational institutions
- Canadian or foreign individuals
- domestic or international for-profit organizations, such as small businesses with less than 500 employees, companies, corporations, and industry associations
- local organizations such as community associations and groups, seniors’ and youth groups, and service clubs
- provincial, territorial, municipal and local governments and their agencies (e.g. crown corporations) and
- foreign recipients which includes an international organization (an intergovernmental organization of which two or more states are members)
Points to Consider
- Projects may be national, regional or local in scope
- The maximum duration of a project is 3 years
- Up to a maximum of $10 million per recipient per year is available
