The Embassy of United States in Gambia is seeking applications for its Democracy and Human Rights Fund (DHRF) Program with an aim to provide assistance through grants to indigenous civil society organizations or Community Based Organizations (CBOs) that will implement small, short-term, highly targeted activities designed to show measurable results with an emphasis on change in support of human rights and democratic institutions.
The Fund aims to improve the quality of life for Gambians at the community level.
Focus Themes
- Change in civil and political rights;
- Adherence to the Rule of Law through legal framework conducive to civil and political rights;
- Free and democratic electoral systems;
- Development of democratic principles that promote human rights and result in change;
- Increase access of women and ethnic groups to the judicial and to political processes.
Funding Information: The Fund will not exceed the amount $25,000.
Eligibility Criteria
All DHRF funded activities must have a substantive link to the promotion of democracy or human rights.
- The proposal must be community initiative coming from an organization and not from an individual. The organization must also be registered as an NGO or CBO.
- The proposal must not serve a religious or ethnic interest. It must serve the whole community.
- The proposal must have a budget that is within the limit set for funding under both SSH and DHRF. Example it must not exceed $10,000 for SSH and $50,000 for DHRF.
- The project must be feasible and viable. In other words, the community must be able to implement it as agreed.
- The project must also be sustainable. It must have an impact on the lives of the community.
- The project should be completed within 12 months.
- The project must be environmentally friendly and not have negative impact on the community.
- The proposal must help to promote good governance and democracy in the country as well as human rights (DHRF).
- The proposal must be generated in the field within the particular country context and be based on specific requests from indigenous organizations.
- The proposal must clearly describe how the activities will be managed.
- The proposal must identify the anticipated results.
- The proposals must demonstrate that a change in democracy and/or human rights practices or law will occur, or that beneficiaries will receive a new awareness or democratic and/or human rights principles.
- It must address civil and political rights (i.e. activities that promote the rule of law or domestic and civil and legal rights.
