Nominations are open for the 2018 N-Peace Awards in order to recognize individuals who work on women, peace and security by profiling, documenting and highlighting their work and achievements.
The Awards are intended to further the cause of peace, gender equality, equal participation, and empowerment of women. Currently unique to the Asia-Pacific region, N-Peace operates in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Nepal, with the goal of implementing UNSCR 1325, and enhancing the role of women in conflict resolution and peace-building.
Award Categories & Criteria
The 3 categories under the 2018 N-Peace Awards are as follows:
- Sharing Untold Stories – Women transforming their communities (one from each country):
- This category recognizes the efforts of women who have demonstrated skills in conflict resolution, prevention, and peace building in their communities. There will be 7 winners in total for this category.
- This category focuses on women working at the grassroots level (i.e. local communities, non-government organizations)
- Eligibility Criteria
- Women from the Philippines, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka or Pakistan. Nominee must be residing in the Asia-Pacific region at the time of being nominated.
- Must be aged 26 years or older and must not have previously won a N-Peace Award;
- Must have worked on furthering the cause of peace, gender equality, equal participation and empowerment of women including:
- PARTICIPATION: representation at any levels of decision making, including peace-processes, electoral processes and other decision making bodies at the national and sub-national levels;
- CONFLICT PREVENTION: contributing to preventing the emergence, spread and emergence of violent conflict, and/or addressing root causes of conflict;
- PROTECTION: contributing to the protection of women and girls in conflict and post-conflict settings, including reporting and prosecution of sexual and gender-based violence.
- RELIEF AND RECOVERY: contributing to relief and recovery including working on health services, income generations and trauma counseling. Contributions to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence is also included.
- Must have demonstrated capacity in mobilizing people and resources for peacebuilding;
- Must agree to share information about their work for N-Peace advocacy and promotional purposes.
- Campaigning for Action – women and men mobilizing for peace (one woman and one man from each focus country):
- This category recognizes the efforts of men and women whose efforts have resulted in the advancement of the women, peace and security agenda. This category focuses on men and women who work at leadership and at the policy and decision making levels.
- Eligibility Criteria
- Women and men from the Philippines, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar or Pakistan are eligible. Nominee must be residing in the Asia-Pacific region at the time of being nominated.
- Must be aged 26 years or older and must not have previously won an N-Peace award;
- Must have worked on furthering the cause of peace, gender equality, equal participation and empowerment of women including:
- PARTICIPATION: representation at any levels of decision making, including peace-processes, electoral processes and other decision making bodies at the national and sub-national levels;
- CONFLICT PREVENTION: contributing to preventing the emergence, spread and emergence of violent conflict, and/or addressing root causes of conflict;
- PROTECTION: contributing to the protection: contributing to the protection of women and girls in conflict and post-conflict settings, including reporting and prosecution of sexual and gender-based violence.
- RELIEF AND RECOVERY: contributing to relief and recovery including working on health services, income generations and trauma counseling. Contributions to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence is also included.
- Must be a civil society representative in a leadership position, a Member of Parliament, public servant or a government official and/or individual in a decision making role. For example, the nominee could be a police officer who has a sought and achieved national policy change on women and security, or a member of a district council who has a consistently advocated for the inclusion of women in peace processes and mobilized resources to implement this;
- Must show wide-ranging action in advocating for systematic change relating to women’s inclusion in conflict prevention, resolution, peacebuilding or security.
- Must have demonstrated capacity in mobilizing people and resources for peacebuilding;
- Must agree to share information about their work for N-Peace advocacy and promotional purposes.
- The Peace Generation – young women and men building peace through volunteerism (one woman and one man)
- This award recognizes the work of a young woman or man (between the ages of 18-25) who has demonstrated volunteerism as a powerful means of promoting social cohesion and reconciliation through engaging people (especially young people).
- This award recognizes the work of youth volunteers in policy change, advocacy and mobilization, or community action that has resulted in the advancement of women, peace and security.
- Eligibility Criteria
- Women and men from the Philippines, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar or Pakistan are eligible. Nominee must be residing in the Asia-Pacific region at the time of being nominated.
- Must be aged 25 years or younger and must not have previously won an N-Peace award;
- Must have worked on furthering the cause of peace, gender equality, equal participation and empowerment of women including:
- PARTICIPATION: advocating and working towards including and representation women at any levels of decision making, including peace-processes, electoral processes and other decision making bodies at the national and sub-national levels;
- CONFLICT PREVENTION: contributing to preventing the emergence, spread and or emergence of violent conflict or addressing root causes of conflict;
- PROTECTION: contributing to the protection of women and girls in conflict and post-conflict settings, including reporting and prosecution of sexual and gender-based violence.
- RELIEF AND RECOVERY: contributing to the gender dimensions of relief and recovery including working on health services, income generations and trauma counseling. Contributions to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence is also included.
- Should be viewed as an emerging leader in their local community or country;
- Should have demonstrated leadership potential in working towards the women, peace and security agenda;
- Could be a representative of an organization, government department, civil society or educational institute. Nominees could also be independent members of the public who have demonstrated leadership in peacebuilding.
