Applicants are invited to apply for Prime Minister’s (PM) National Youth Awards for Excellence which is open to all Jamaican nationals between 15-29 years old, who are living in Jamaica and the Diaspora, and who have attained excellence and world class achievement.
The PM Awards was started in 1998 as part of the Values and Attitudes Programme of the then government. After a 3-year hiatus, the Awards was restarted in 2017 as a means of recognising and saluting youth (aged 15-29) who have distinguished themselves in various sectors.
Categories
AGRICULTURE & AGRO-PROCESSING
The nominee must distinguish him/herself in the field of agriculture, S/he must:
- Own and operate an agro-business endeavour which incorporates the use of new technology in agricultural production AND/OR
- Have advanced scientific research in agriculture AND/OR
- Developed a new product or technology related to agriculture
ENTREPRENEURSHIP / SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The nominee must be distinguished as an emerging youth entrepreneur. S/he must:
- Operate a profitable, registered business venture
- Generate levels of direct and indirect employment AND/OR
- Operate a social enterprise that has contributed significant social and economic value at the community and/or national level
JOURNALISM / E-JOURNALISM
The nominee should have produced a high standard of journalism. S/he must:
- Have consistently produced high quality and in-depth coverage of national, regional or international issues
- Have produced a body of work which has had national impact, and/or led to the resolution of a situation or improvement in the well being of people involved
- Have received a regional or international award in recognition of his/her journalistic endeavours
ARTS AND CULTURE
The nominee must have proven him/herself to be outstanding in the visual, performing, literary or culinary arts or culture. S/he must:
- Have gained international recognition, evidenced by competition results, international reviews or international chart standings
- Have participated in a minimum of two critically acclaimed exhibitions or productions
The nominee should have consistently demonstrated leadership qualities at a world class level S/he must have:
- Demonstrated an active leadership history at the corporate, local, national or international level
- Served at the specified level for a minimum of three years and made significant and demonstrable impact over the period
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
The individual or youth organisation should consistently lead or be engaged in a high level of environmental advocacy and initiatives. Nominees must:
- Have proven him/herself to be an influential and effective environmental steward/leader
- Have gained international/national recognition as an environmental advocate
For organisations, a minimum of 80% of the membership should be 29 years old or under.
The nominee must have achieved significant success at the Junior or Senior level in his/her sport. S/he or the team must:
- Have performed meritoriously at the junior and/or senior level in international competition AND/OR
- Have attained a consistent world ranking (1-10) in his/her sport AND/OR
- Have achieved a world-leading performance.
NATION BUILDER AWARD
The nominee must have demonstrated outstanding and consistent voluntary service relevant to the development of youth and their community. S/he must:
- Have positively impacted youth at a national or community level
- Have consistently served voluntarily over at least a 3-year period
- Have given service which is not related to mandatory obligations for work or school
ACADEMICS
The nominee must display outstanding academic achievement in their field of study. S/he must:
- Achieved a top three regional ranking at CAPE and CSEC levels AND/OR
- Have completed a Bachelor Degree and attained a First Class Honours and maintained an A+ academic average throughout the course of study
- Post-graduate nominees must have completed a thesis with distinction and/or published in an internationally recognised journal
INNOVATION IN SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
The nominee must have distinguished him/herself in the field of Science and Technology. S/he must have:
- Proven to be innovative in providing a scientific or technological solution to a problem
- Gained national/international recognition in the field and/or participated in a minimum of two critically acclaimed exhibitions
- Advanced research in science and/or technology
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AWARD
The individual or organisation must:
- Have been involved in youth work for over a period of five years
- Have significantly impacted youth from one of the priority groups of the National Youth Policy
- Be able to demonstrate that their work has been acknowledged as a best practice
INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT
The nominee should have achieved international recognition in a field other than the previously listed categories. S/he must:
- Have gained international top 10 world ranking or recognition in a field other than the above-mentioned categories
Eligibility Criteria
- Be a Jamaican national (including those living overseas)
- Must be born between January 1, 1989 and December 31, 2003.
