Deadline: 30-Sep-2025
The World Food Programme (WFP) is implementing an initiative in Namibia’s Ohangwena and Kavango West regions to strengthen education, food security, livelihoods, and nutrition through school-based food system projects.
This program combines agricultural development with school feeding and skills training, aiming to improve both immediate and long-term outcomes for children and adolescents.
The project begins with an inception phase, during which site visits will be conducted to assess land suitability, water availability, and specific school needs. These assessments will be carried out in collaboration with existing school-based project committees, ensuring that local input shapes the planning process.
A central focus of the initiative is the establishment of greenhouses and poultry facilities. The greenhouses will be equipped with irrigation systems and designed to support the cultivation of diverse crops, including onions, tomatoes, spinach, carrots, cabbage, beetroot, and green peppers. Poultry facilities will also be constructed to provide a steady supply of eggs, enhancing the nutritional value of school meals. To support these operations, inputs such as seeds, seedlings, poultry stock, feed, and tools will be provided.
Capacity building forms another important component of the program. Project staff and school committees will receive training on horticulture and poultry production, as well as guidance on developing planting and production schedules. This will help schools maintain the projects sustainably while providing students with opportunities to learn valuable agricultural and livelihood skills.
Ongoing monitoring and reporting will ensure the effectiveness of the initiative. Monthly reports, along with a final completion report, will outline progress, results, and strategies for transitioning the projects into long-term school-based food systems. Project management will oversee both construction and implementation, ensuring high standards and successful outcomes.
Through this comprehensive approach, WFP’s initiative is designed to provide nutritious school meals, build adolescent skills, strengthen smallholder market support, and improve overall nutrition, laying the foundation for healthier and more resilient communities in Namibia.
