Call for Proposals: Innovative approaches to access to Medicines in Malawi

#image_title

Deadline: 25-Aug-2025

Action medeor Malawi is inviting proposals for small, innovative pilot projects aimed at improving access to medicines in crisis-affected areas. These projects are meant to address the urgent healthcare needs of communities impacted by emergencies, disasters, or humanitarian crises.

Access to medicines is a key part of the human right to health, yet around 2 billion people globally still struggle to obtain the treatments they need. This issue is even more critical in regions hit by crisis, where supply chains break down and health systems are under pressure. Recent funding cuts, such as those from USAID, have worsened these challenges. To respond, action medeor is supporting short-term, small-scale initiatives that test new ways to improve access in difficult settings.

Projects should address one or more of the four access dimensions outlined in the WHO MSH framework: availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability. Persistent barriers include lack of treatment options, unreliable supply chains, high out-of-pocket costs, and low health literacy or trust in health services. Access issues also vary depending on geography, age, gender, health condition, and the nature of the crisis.

Each project may focus on specific target groups, diseases, medicines, or services. Examples include community-led healthcare, innovations in supply chains, financing models, or digital health tools. action medeor is especially interested in understanding what works in the Malawian context and learning from grassroots approaches.

Funding is available up to a maximum of 70,000 EUR, though smaller requests are also welcome. To be eligible, organizations must be officially registered non-profits in Malawi, have a track record in humanitarian or development work, and possess solid financial and reporting systems. They must also have qualified staff and be able to provide project documentation and visual materials for fundraising purposes.
