CFAs: Nutrition and resilience support in Kassala (Sudan)

Deadline: 21-Nov-2025

The Italian Agency For Development Cooperation has been launched in Kassala State, located in eastern Sudan, with the aim of combating malnutrition and improving the health of vulnerable populations.

The project will focus on addressing both acute and chronic malnutrition, particularly among pregnant women and children under five, as well as individuals with disabilities, internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, and host communities. This comprehensive approach combines direct nutrition interventions, community awareness-raising activities, strengthening local health services, and distributing therapeutic food to those most in need.

The goal of this initiative is to reduce the prevalence of moderate and severe malnutrition, improve maternal and child health outcomes, and promote appropriate feeding practices across the targeted communities. The project is designed not only to address immediate nutrition-related needs but also to build long-term resilience in the local population by improving the overall nutritional standards in line with international recommendations and Sudan’s humanitarian priorities. The intervention will take into account gender equality, ensuring that women are fully involved in activities, and it will include persons with disabilities to ensure that no one is left behind.

As part of the broader program “Combating Malnutrition in the State of Kassala” (AID 11812), this project will integrate multiple sectors to tackle malnutrition and improve sanitation and hygiene. The program aims to strengthen the delivery of essential services such as health, sanitation, agriculture, and education, while also promoting the resilience of local communities. By addressing the underlying factors of malnutrition, the initiative will contribute to the overall well-being of the most vulnerable populations, making it a holistic and sustainable approach.

One of the key aspects of this intervention is its community-driven nature. Local health and community workers will be trained in the prevention and management of malnutrition, enabling them to support their communities more effectively. In addition, the project will focus on changing social behaviors by encouraging beneficiaries to adopt new nutritional practices and hygiene standards. This “Social Change Behavior” approach will be vital in ensuring that the benefits of the program are long-lasting and lead to sustainable improvements in health.

Governance is another important area of focus, as the project will provide technical assistance to promote strong political commitment and effective coordination among government bodies. This will ensure that nutrition policies and strategies are effectively implemented at all levels of government and in the community. By working at both the governance and community levels, the initiative aims to create lasting, systemic change that can be scaled beyond the targeted areas.

The maximum funding available for this initiative is €450,000, with a project duration of up to eight months. Organizations eligible to apply for funding must be registered according to the relevant laws and not have any outstanding debts or legal issues. They must also be up to date with tax payments and social security contributions.

This initiative represents a critical step in addressing the persistent issue of malnutrition in Sudan and improving the lives of some of the country’s most vulnerable populations. By combining direct nutritional interventions with education, community involvement, and strong governance support, the project aims to create a sustainable impact that will benefit communities for years to come.
