Submissions open for Cláudio Weber Abramo Data Journalism Award (Brazil)

The Escola de Dados is accepting applications for the Cláudio Weber Abramo Data Journalism Award to encourage excellence in the use of data by journalists to question, analyze and investigate issues that affect Brazilian society.

They believe that by recognizing excellent work they strengthen this field and democracy in Brazil.

The 2023 edition of the Cláudio Weber Abramo Data Journalism Award (hereinafter referred to as the award) will be organized by Open Knowledge Brasil. The award has the institutional support of the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism and Transparência Brasil.

Objectives

• The award has the following general objectives:
  • Encourage the use of data in its different formats (tabular data, maps, network analysis, natural language processing, etc.) to address topics of high social relevance;
  • Stimulate the production and use of open data on topics of public interest in journalism;
  • Support transparency and open data initiatives produced by or with potential use for Brazilian journalism;
  • Inspire students and journalists to work with data in their investigations; and
  • Recognize outstanding professionals and work in the field of data journalism.

Categories

• The Cláudio Weber Abramo Data Journalism Award has national coverage and receives entries in four categories:
  • Research
    • When data reveals what was unknown. The category will recognize discoveries and new knowledge that were obtained thanks to innovative analyzes or unprecedented data collection.
    • The focus is on journalistic investigations where working with data was fundamental for producing news about facts that were previously unknown or insufficiently explored.
  • Data visualization
    • Data is beautiful! The category recognizes the best journalistic data visualization works. Here, what matters most is the ability to present and communicate data, as well as good practices in information design and usability.
  • Innovation and experimentation
    • In this category, they will recognize innovative data journalism works, which deviate from the routine and bring elements of experimentation. Innovation is not just restricted to the use of new technologies, but can also involve unusual methodologies and formats.
  • Open data
    • Here, the focus is on transparency practices, whether by using mechanisms such as the Access to Information Law, by structuring and making open data available, by documenting methodology or by publishing scripts and software.
    • An award for best practices in the use of open data carried out not only by the press, but also by civil society organizations, universities, governments and other actors who have developed journalistic work.

Prize Information

• The Organizing Committee will equally divide the total prize (R$ 10,000) between the winning projects, which will be elected by the jury. Payment will be made in a single installment to the person responsible for registering each project, via bank deposit and upon signature of a receipt, within 30 business days of sending the signature on the receipt and other information.

Requirements

• Participation in the Prize is open to anyone who meets the requirements below:
  • Have published work with a journalistic nature (reports, platforms or journalistic products or those with potential use in journalism) in any medium (digital, print, TV, radio) after September 23, 2022.
  • Sole Paragraph: Works produced by press offices, works with sponsored content (branded content) financed by commercial organizations or works with direct participation of jury members in the team are not eligible.
  • Teamwork may be submitted, involving more than one person or organization. Registration must be made by a person responsible for the work, which must include other members and organizations in the appropriate field.
  • Works in different formats are accepted, such as: online or printed publications; reports for television or radio; hotsites and web platforms; videos or other physical or virtual means, as long as access to the work is public, whether free access or not.
  • Each applicant may submit up to three works per category and the entry of the same work in more than one category is prohibited. If the same work is entered in different categories or more than three projects are sent per category, only the most recent submissions will be taken into account.
  • After confirmation of submission, changes to registration data will not be accepted.
  • Sole Paragraph: Basic information about the registered works (such as title, link, summary, image and others) will be made publicly available by the Organizing Committee, such as a table and/or a gallery of entries. Personal information, such as email and telephone number of those responsible for registration, will not be published.
