Applications open for Safety First Grant – UK

Deadline: 01-Sep-2025

The Safety First Grant is designed to enhance community safety across Norfolk Southern’s 22-state rail network. This program supports organizations that provide direct safety services or run initiatives promoting safe behavior. Funding is awarded only for specific projects and programs, not for general operational expenses.

Norfolk Southern prioritizes investments that promote education and awareness about accident prevention and safe behavior. They also support readiness initiatives that equip first responders to handle emergencies effectively. Grants may go to programs aimed at addressing criminal activity and supporting disaster relief efforts.

Beyond safety, the company is committed to sustainability. It invests in programs that build environmental awareness and stewardship, support conservation efforts, and revitalize industrial areas through beautification projects. Grants may also support efforts to improve air and water quality and reduce harmful emissions.

Workforce development is another major focus. Norfolk Southern supports programs that provide professional and technical skill-building, help individuals access entry-level jobs, and guide young adults in making career and college decisions. Mentorships, job training, and career readiness programs are eligible for funding.

Norfolk Southern also invests in thriving communities. This includes support for basic necessities, mental health and substance abuse programs, and domestic violence assistance. They fund initiatives that preserve local culture, enhance community spaces, and drive economic development to build stronger, more vibrant neighborhoods.

To be eligible, applicants must be tax-exempt nonprofit organizations, either classified as a public 501(c)(3) listed in the IRS Master File or a government entity serving the broader community. Organizations must be located within 30 minutes of a Norfolk Southern rail line, with preference given to those nearest the rail.

The program does not accept applications from organizations outside the Norfolk Southern network, those requesting general operating support, or groups without appropriate nonprofit or government status. Additionally, they will not fund individuals or organizations with discriminatory policies based on race, gender, or other protected categories.
