The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) has announced a new funding opportunity designed to strengthen nursing-led programs that foster community-partnered research addressing persistent health challenges.
Through this initiative, schools and colleges of nursing are encouraged to develop innovative research centers that enhance infrastructure, build interdisciplinary teams, and meaningfully engage communities in the research process.
At the core of this opportunity is the establishment of P20 Exploratory Centers, which aim to build capacity for interdisciplinary research while centering nursing’s holistic approach to health. These centers will establish centralized research resources within schools or colleges of nursing, expand expertise in community-partnered research, and develop nurse-led research teams that collaborate with communities in shaping, implementing, and evaluating health-focused studies.
The program underscores NINR’s mission of addressing health and well-being not only in clinical settings but also in the environments where people live, learn, work, and play. By applying NINR’s research lenses and principles, funded centers are expected to pioneer approaches that address the root causes of health challenges and improve outcomes for diverse populations.
Applications may request budgets of up to $500,000 in direct costs per year, with projects running for a maximum of five years. The funding is intended to reflect the actual needs of each proposed project while supporting both infrastructure development and pilot research activities.
A wide range of organizations are eligible to apply, including higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profits, local and Tribal governments, and federal agencies. While non-domestic entities are not eligible, U.S.-based organizations and their components are encouraged to apply.
This initiative builds on NINR’s longstanding commitment to supporting nurse scientists and interdisciplinary teams that advance health equity and improve outcomes at both individual and community levels. By investing in the next generation of nursing research leaders, NINR is promoting science that addresses not only disease but also the broader conditions that shape health across the lifespan.
