The Government of South Australia is seeking nominations for the Governor’s Multicultural Awards to promote multiculturalism and increase the understanding of the benefits of cultural diversity in the community.
The awards are administered by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet through Multicultural Affairs. They are presented by the Governor of South Australia, on the advice of an independent judging panel.
South Australians are encouraged to nominate an individual, team or organisation that is passionate about making a positive contribution to multiculturalism and intercultural understanding, and promoting the culturally-diverse state.
Categories
The award categories are:
- Outstanding individual achievement: An outstanding individual who has distinguished themselves by advancing and promoting multiculturalism, social cohesion and intercultural understanding in South Australia for at least 10 years.
- Arts and culture: An individual or organisation making an outstanding contribution to promoting multiculturalism in the South Australian community through the arts or cultural activities.
- Community sector: An individual or team of employees or volunteers in a not-for-profit community organisation, or within a broader organisation, whose work has promoted multiculturalism and improved community harmony and inclusion.
- Media: A journalist or media communicator who has demonstrated significant commitment or achievement in promoting multiculturalism, harmony, and inclusion through traditional or new media, resulting in positive outcomes for the South Australian community.
- Private sector: A private sector business, team or employee who has provided outstanding services above and beyond their role, which fosters cultural diversity and inclusion in the workplace or the community.
- Public sector: A local, state or federal government department, unit, team or individual who has provided outstanding services, above and beyond their role, which recognise, foster or promote inclusion and cultural diversity in South Australia.
- Senior volunteer: An individual over 60 years of age, who has been a longstanding volunteer within South Australia’s multicultural community. The individual may be a volunteer in the not-for-profit, private or government sector.
- Volunteer: An active volunteer with at least five years of service who has made an outstanding contribution to multiculturalism in the South Australian community.
- Youth: An individual under 30 years of age, or a youth organisation or group of individuals under 30 years of age who have promoted multiculturalism, community harmony or intercultural understanding in the South Australian community.
Criteria
- Nominations should only be made in one category and the nominee must be nominated while they are living, however, the award can be awarded posthumously.
- The nomination must include a supporting statement of up to 500 words that demonstrates the nominee’s contributions and achievements in the selected category.
- This statement should include:
- the nominee’s name and achievements (past and present)
- details of the nominee’s contributions towards promoting multiculturalism and increasing understanding of cultural diversity in South Australia during the relevant period of two (2) years leading up.
- efforts in the community
- the number of years the nominee has been engaged in relevant activities
- other relevant achievements or evidence of public recognition
- other relevant current or previous positions held by the nominee
- examples of publication/s, article/s, broadcast/s or other relevant media content to support the nomination (Media Award category only).
