Request for Proposals: CBRL Project Grant Program (UK)

Applications open for Local Projects Grant Program in Turkey

Deadline: 09-January-2026

The Council for British Research in the Levant invites applications for Project Grant Program to support early career and established researchers based at one of the UK’s Higher Education Institutions (HEI) or research organisation, including to undertake pilot work to establish the feasibility of a larger project or to bring an established project to completion.

CBRL’s current major research themes include Heritage – understanding the past and its present impacts, States, societies and cultures of the Levant, Cities and urbanisation, Refugees, migration, displacement, diasporas and the Challenges of sustainability and resilience.

CBRL encourages both disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, as well as collaborative research projects that include in-country partnerships and co-investigators. Grants are available for early career and established researchers, with a maximum award of £7,000.

Eligible costs include travel and maintenance, consumables, specialist project staff, interpreter or representative fees, direct costs of scientific analyses, illustration, transcription, and translation expenses. Ineligible costs cover computer hardware, institutional overheads, publication, salary replacements, and teaching substitution.

The Principal Investigator must be a registered employee of a UK university or recognised heritage institution at the time of application and throughout the project’s duration. All applications must demonstrate feasibility, particularly given the socio-political context of the region, and must comply with institutional and CBRL requirements for risk assessment, ethics approval, and data management planning prior to the release of funds.

Applicants must ensure that international travel, if proposed, is approved by their host institution’s Risk Assessment process before submission. CBRL will not arrange or secure visas or research permits; applicants are responsible for obtaining necessary documentation and approvals in time to complete their projects. Trustees or staff members associated with CBRL cannot apply as Principal Investigators but may participate as Co-Investigators.

Successful applicants are required to submit a Grant Report Form within one month after the end date of their research and no later than one month after the end of February 2027. Reports must include statements of achievements, expenditure details, and relevant receipts where necessary.

Grant recipients are also required to provide project summaries, images, and links for inclusion on the CBRL research project webpages and may be featured in the CBRL monthly newsletter. Digital data and documentation should be deposited in appropriate archives such as the Arts and Humanities Data Service or ESRC Data Archive within a reasonable timeframe.

The deadline for applications, including references, is Friday, 9th January 2026, and results will be announced towards the end of March 2026.
