Call for Proposals: DCF Bursary Scheme (UK)

Michael & Susan Dell Foundation Funding Program (US)

Deadline: 02-Feb-2026

The DCF Bursary Scheme provides support to Dorset residents between the ages of 16-25 who are in vocational (job-related) courses only.

The overall aim is to transform the lives of the most disadvantaged young people in Dorset, helping them to fulfil their potential through vocational programmes and thereby reduce the likelihood of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training). The main priority is to eliminate the gap between those from deprived backgrounds and those from more affluent backgrounds.

They want to ensure that every young person has the same opportunities to participate and benefit from a place in further education, skills and training. They want to help reach those who need financial support beyond what a government funded bursary can offer.

Bursaries of up to £1,000 are available to assist young people attending vocational and further education courses. Funding is to support vocational (job-related) courses of any length such as a Level 1, 2 or 3 course / BTEC / Diploma and including access courses, traineeships and supported internship – they do not support students studying only A-Levels.

Funding awards may be used for essential items such as IT equipment, study-related clothing, or transport. Applications for laptops and IT resources are considered on a case-by-case basis, with priority given to students without computer access or with specific educational needs. Requests for expensive brands of clothing or equipment are likely to be disregarded in favour of practical, affordable alternatives. Payments are generally made to the college for services like transport or meals, while direct payments to students are based on pre-approved quotes and may require receipts.

The scheme is open to applicants aged 16 to 25 unless there are exceptional circumstances. Eligible applicants must be attending vocational courses, including access courses, traineeships and supported internships, with students combining vocational courses alongside some A-Levels also considered.

The bursary prioritises young people from households with an income of less than £35,000, care leavers, cared-for young people, those with caring responsibilities, disabled young people, and those with special educational needs. Repeat applications are welcomed if students progress to a higher academic level. However, course fees are not covered under the scheme. Financial need must be evidenced and supported by the college before Dorset Community Foundation reviews the application.

Students studying only A-Levels are not eligible, while apprenticeships are only eligible from Weymouth College as part of the pilot scheme. Applicants must attend one of the approved colleges or sixth forms in Dorset, BCP, or nearby areas, and must also apply to their college or sixth form bursary before applying for the Dorset Community Foundation bursary.

Students are expected to provide feedback on their bursary experience, detailing progress and future plans at the end of their course. Although eligibility does not guarantee funding, the Dorset Community Foundation encourages applicants to explain their circumstances and the difference a bursary award would make to their studies and opportunities.

The deadline for applications is 2 February 2026.
