Deadline: 21-Nov-2025
The Dorset Community Foundation is requesting applications for its Superior STEM Bursary Fund to transform the lives of the most disadvantaged young people in Dorset helping them to fulfill their potential in STEM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics.
They want to eliminate the gap between those from deprived backgrounds and those from more affluent backgrounds, and to remove the barriers to education faced by young people who are disadvantaged. They want to ensure that every young person has the same opportunities to participate and benefit from a place in further education, skills and training. They want to help reach those who do not meet the eligibility criteria set by the government or need financial support beyond what a government bursary can offer.
Funding is to support STEM-related courses. Grants of up to £1,500 are available, with eligibility for course fees depending on the applicant’s age.
The bursary scheme is designed for students attending STEM-related courses at Bournemouth and Poole College, Brockenhurst College, and The Bourne Academy. It primarily supports individuals aged between 16 and 25 years who are from households with an income of less than £30,000, have caring responsibilities, are disabled, are care leavers or cared for young people, or have Special Educational Needs. Students who have previously received funding may reapply if they are moving to a higher academic level, with repeat applications considered a priority. Applications must be approved by the college, and the course must begin within two months of the award.
Before applying, students are advised to check eligibility for government bursaries with their college. If additional support is needed, they may apply for the Superior STEM Bursary. Requests for laptops, IT equipment, clothing, or other items will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, with priority given to those lacking access or having specific educational needs. Expensive brands are likely to be disregarded unless a particular requirement is confirmed by the college.
Applications will be reviewed by independent panel members or donors under a confidentiality agreement. Since the fund may receive more applications than it can support, applicants are encouraged to provide detailed personal circumstances and explain how the bursary will benefit them. Successful applicants must agree to grant Terms and Conditions. Payments for items provided by the college, such as transport tickets or meal passes, will usually be made directly to the college. Payments made to students will be based on pre-agreed quotes, and receipts may be requested by Dorset Community Foundation to ensure accountability.
The scheme, its awards, and the achievements of funded students will be publicised to highlight the positive impact of the bursary in supporting disadvantaged young people in STEM education.
Application closes on 21 November 2025.
