The African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) is seeking applications for its Uganda National Journalism Awards 2017 in order to promote reporting that informs and empowers the public, increases the voices and spaces for important information, and holds the powerful to account.
Objectives
- Increase the quantity and quality of public affairs reporting and investigative journalism;
- Promote accurate, knowledgeable and enterprising investigative reporting in all media;
- Advance innovation in storytelling and news presentation;
- Motivate aspiring and young journalists to attain an uphold standards of excellence in their profession; and
- Increase the diversity of voices in media coverage and spaces within which journalists operate.

Prize Information
Both the winner and first runner-up in each category will receive a substantial cash prize. Their work will be celebrated at a grand gala to be held in Kampala in April 2017. Additionally, winning entries will be published online and in a booklet to be distributed by ACME.
Eligibility Criteria
- The competition is open to all journalists, freelance or full-time, working in Uganda.
- Work submitted must be published or broadcast in a Ugandan media outlet or a regional news outlet with wide distribution in Uganda.
- Any news article, broadcast programme or series, covering a single topic or subject in the categories listed for competition, is eligible.
- If a story series is submitted, no more than the best three parts of the series should be entered into competition.
- Local language articles and broadcasts may be entered, but must be accompanied with English translations or transcripts (for broadcast).
- If a story with a shared byline is submitted, a detailed explanation of each team member’s participation must be given. Cash prizes for shared bylines are shared equally among all journalists, unless there is a clear lead writer and this testimony is backed by a letter from a participant’s editorial manager.
