Open Call: Australian French Student Exchanges Grant Program

Deadline: 22-Sep-2025

The Embassy of France to Australia is offering grants to researchers and higher education teachers to support student exchange projects (PhD and post-doctorate level) between Australia and New Caledonia, Wallis-and-Futuna and French Polynesia.

The purpose of the present call is to contribute to the funding of exchange projects undertaken by Australia or French Pacific based academics and universities to strengthen links between Australia, New Caledonia, Wallis-and-Futuna, French Polynesia, and the Pacific. Projects can be for research, higher learning or both. All fields of science, including humanities and social sciences are eligible to apply.

Projects can take the form of summer schools, language and cultural immersion sessions, workshops, fieldwork, curriculum development, or other activities best suited to the learning or research objectives of the applicant. Projects should involve PhD students and post-docs travel to the French territories (New Caledonia, Wallis-and-Futuna and French Polynesia), or reciprocal student exchanges (PhD students and post-docs) between Australia and these territories (ex: student exchanges from New Caledonia, Wallis-and-Futuna and French Polynesia to Australia, and within the same project, student exchanges from Australia to these territories).

Applicants with projects involving more than one partner from the French territories in the Pacific, whether based on an existing collaboration or looking to initiate one, are strongly encouraged to apply. Projects must be part of a strategic plan, within the framework of the Franco-Australian roadmap. This call is not intended to fund a single project that is not part of a medium or longer-term perspective. Successful projects will have to explain and highlight the impact of their actions in the framework of the Australia-France Roadmap.

The total budget allocated for this call is AUD 50,000, with a maximum of three projects to be funded under this amount. Eligible applicants include researchers and higher education staff working for Australian or French Pacific based universities or research organisations. Funding can cover travel costs for PhD and post-doctorate level students, provided they are over 18 years of age and enrolled in an eligible university.

Projects supported through this initiative must be completed by 1st October 2026. A selection committee appointed by the Embassy of France to Australia will evaluate all applications, and project coordinators will be notified of the outcome and the level of funding granted.

Successful project coordinators will be required to acknowledge the support of the Embassy of France to Australia in all communication materials, provide these materials in advance for dissemination, and submit a final project report by 1st November 2026.

In addition, the Embassy reserves the right to communicate about funded projects and public events. Grant recipients will collaborate with the Embassy’s communication team to produce promotional content such as videos or images, which will be shared across official channels. Beneficiaries are also encouraged to promote their projects on social media while ensuring that the Embassy’s support is duly credited, either in text form or through the official logo provided. The application deadline for this call is 22 September 2025.
