The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia is pleased to announce an open competition for the Youth Journalism Development Program to train at least 75 high school and college-aged youth in ethnic Azerbaijani and Armenian populated regions of Georgia.
The program aims to give the youth basic skills in multimedia journalism, media literacy, civic education, English language, and fundamentals of entrepreneurship.
At the end of the program the participants should develop basic journalism production skills, become more inclined and committed to using reliable media sources, and have develop stronger English language skills enabling them to communicate and consume media in English.
Goals and Objectives
- The Youth Journalism Development Program in ethnic minority regions takes a multidisciplinary non-formal education approach to promoting civic engagement among ethnic-Azeri and ethnic-Armenian youth.
- The program is designed to use multimedia journalism production techniques to engage students with a deeper understanding of the news/information, general media environment, and engage them in conversations about civic education.
- Media literacy, English language, basic business skills, social media and social entrepreneurship are also woven into the program.
- The Youth Journalism Development Program will train at least 75 high school and college-aged youth in ethnic Azerbaijani and Armenian populated regions to help them acquire multimedia, media literacy, civic education, basic business, and the English language skills. Participants will be ethnic-Armenian and ethin-Azeri youth from ages 15 to 20 who live in Samtkhe Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli regions.
- The Public Affairs Section expects the implementer to engage participants in at least 270 hours of structured activities over the course of nine months, including: 130 hours of multi-media storytelling and journalism classes; 24 hours of pitch training; and 120 hours of English language lessons.
- The applicant must demonstrate how the elements of civic education and basic entrepreneurial skills can be woven into the training course plan.
- Anticipated Short-Term outcomes: Participants should develop journalism production and storytelling skills, become more committed to using reliable media sources, develop stronger English language skills, enabling them to communicate and consume media in English.
- Anticipated Long-Term outcomes: After the program ends, participants are expected to maintain their resilience to disinformation and continue development of the English language skills. They should also seek out opportunities to engage with Georgians outside their ethnic minority communities through vocational or higher education, through civil society engagement, or through professional activities.
Funding Information
- Up to $150,000 is available for this grant program, with a possible extension upon availability of additional funds.
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligibility is limited to Georgian educational institutions and non-governmental organizations.
- Applicants must have a demonstrated expertise in teaching, conducting workshops and short-term specialized courses in journalism, media literacy, civic education and English language skills.
- Applicants should demonstrate ability to work with the youth in ethnic minority regions of Georgia: Samtskhe Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli.
- Capability to deliver training in the Azeri and Armenian languages and prior experience of working with the identified target communities will be favorably considered.
