Open Call: Nordic Chemicals Programme – Theme 3

Deadline: 31-Oct-2025

The Nordic Council of Ministers has announced its Nordic Chemicals Programme – Theme 3 to reduce the risks posed by hazardous chemicals and pollution, both globally and locally, by enhancing the exchange of knowledge, producing new knowledge, and identifying and utilising synergies between the Nordic chemical authorities (Goal 3 of the new Cooperation Programme 2025-2030).

Within Theme 3, priorities include screening and identifying emerging hazardous chemicals and pollutants in the Nordic environment, coordinating high-standard scientific studies, and collecting data on their distribution in the environment and biota to support EU regulations and international conventions. It also emphasises strengthening collaboration and awareness among authorities, scientists, and policymakers, supporting substitution programmes that reduce harmful exposures, and enhancing knowledge in vulnerable regions such as the Arctic.

A significant focus will also be placed on PFAS-related projects to meet the growing demand for knowledge and restrictions on their use. Additionally, the programme will support workshops on emerging environmental issues to foster dialogue and harmonisation between science and policy across the Nordic region.

The programme has a financial framework of 3M DKK and projects may run up to two years, until 2027. Eligible applicants include municipal, regional, or national authorities, universities, colleges, research institutes, and other non-profit organisations. Business enterprises may participate as partners but cannot act as the main applicants.

To ensure Nordic collaboration, project applications must involve at least three Nordic countries—Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden—with the option of including one Baltic country (Estonia, Lithuania, or Latvia) as a substitute for one Nordic partner. Involvement is defined as helping to run, implement, or guide the project.

Proposals will be evaluated by the Nordic Chemicals Programme Steering Committee based on the overall quality, expected results, competence of the team, relevance to programme goals, and the added value of Nordic cooperation. Projects aligning with the stated priorities of Theme 3 will be given precedence. The deadline for submission is Friday, 31 October 2025, at 11:59 PM.
