The Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) is seeking applications for its Eurasia Lab & Fellowship Program that makes use of its vast expertise in and on the Eurasia region. It connects its different networks and integrates them into other already existing networks.
Thus, the program creates one major network of researchers, practitioners, and activists working on Eurasia, which increases its outreach to relevant stakeholders and therefore serves as a major contact point for all actors working on Eurasia.
The Fellowship Program
- The program gives the opportunity to outstanding junior researchers from the Eurasia region to receive a scholarship to advance their research projects and to get integrated into the network.
- To this end, the fellows participate and are actively involved in the program events. Also, in a podcast series, they present themselves and their research project to the network.
Benefits
- a one-time scholarship of up to 9,000 € to conduct the research project (research phase: December 2020 – April 2021),
- continuous online mentoring until May 2021,
- networking opportunities with like-minded researchers, practitioners, and activists working on the region,
- participation and active involvement in the program’s online events,
- the production of a podcast series to present the research projects to the relevant audience.
The Eurasia Lab
To this end, the program organizes different networking activities as a series of online events to bring together people from various networks. These include:
- a workshop to discuss the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for researchers working in and on Eurasia,
- a workshop to bring together experts, activists, and representatives of funding institutions to discuss and elaborate project ideas which can thus function as an incubator for new (research) projects,
- a public event for experts, researchers, policy-makers, and stakeholders to raise the visibility of the research activities of the network members.
Eligibility Criteria
- The call is open to junior researchers (preferably research teams of 2 or 3 people, exceptionally also individual researchers) who:
- are affiliated with universities, other research institutions or think tanks from Eastern Europe (Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine), the Southern Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia), and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan) OR citizens of any of these countries (an affiliation outside the region is possible),
- are working on their research project with a current and/or forward-looking policy relevance:
- in political science, international relations, economics, contemporary history or a closely related field of study,
- in the area of EU-Eurasia relations or with a focus on civil society, human rights, democratic participation or governmental, educational, and justice system reforms in the region.
- Hold a Master’s or an equivalent degree.
- Have written and oral fluency in English.
- Have Internet access.
- Are willing to advance their research project substantially until the end of the research phase in April 2021 and present their (preliminary) research results at the program’s final conference and/or in a non-written format of publication.

- curriculum vitae;
- certificate of Masters or equivalent degree;
- a short outline of the research project (in English, max. 700 words);
- statement of motivation why this grant program would be of personal and professional use (in English, max. 500 words);
- not mandatory: example of a relevant publication or university assignment in English.
