Cultural Survival is pleased to announce a call for applications for the Indigenous Youth Arts Fellowships Project for Indigenous youth based in the United States and Canada.
This project will support youth knowledge holders and creators who through their leadership and creativity have the potential to significantly advance their work, leading to transformative and impactful spaces within their communities.
With years of experience coordinating capacity building through workshops, conferences, exchanges, and networks, Cultural Survival believes that it is essential to listen and respond to the self-determined needs of communities to provide the support that is sustainable and, most importantly, relevant to the needs of the communities serve.
Objective
Support Indigenous youth leaders who are creating and disseminating knowledge through creative ways and critical thinking to advance their areas of work, ultimately leading to impactful transformative spaces in their communities.
Focus Areas
The fellowship will support Indigenous youth leaders, including content creators, writers, artists, and communicators. Proposals for creative projects will be accepted in the following categories:
- Arts: Painting, participatory murals, photography, craftsmanship, graphic illustrations, weaving, music.
- Writing: Journalism, storytelling, investigative reporting, poetry, opinion articles.
- Capacity Building: Projects that support multidisciplinary arts and creative writing, communication, and art.

Funding Information
- Number of fellowships to be awarded: 4
- Fellowship amount: $4,500 USD
- Ages: 16-28 years old
- Execution period: 6 months (October 2022 – March 2023)
Eligibility Criteria
- Individual: Indigenous youth from 16-28 years old; or collective: Group of Indigenous youth between 16-28 years old.
- Residents of the United States/Canada.
- Access to the internet and other forms of communication to collaborate creatively with other fellows, the CS team, and to be able to participate in video conferences.
- Demonstrated participation in community life (Recommendation letter of a community organization/reservation or Indigenous authority)
- The applicant should not have been a former Cultural Survival fellow.
Fellowship Criteria
- If the project is executed by that there a group of youth, it is expected will be at least 50% of women or other genders involved in the project.
- The project is founded on Indigenous knowledge, practices, and worldview.
- Measurable and executable project in the stipulated period.
- Dissemination of the project through media (radio, TV, social media), presentations, exhibitions, publication, etc.
- Budgeted items accordingly to the offered amount.
