The IWMF initiative, Express Yourself! , seeks to support the production of high-quality journalism with a focus on gender and sexual diversity that makes it possible to make visible the problems faced by women and LGBTIQ + people in Latin America.
Within this framework, the initiative will begin its third year of the professional development program for journalists in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico with scholarships for journalistic specialization in a gender and sexual diversity approach.
The IWMF will select 60 journalists in the four countries to participate in the initiative. Those who are part of the selection will receive training in how to produce more inclusive journalism, and in safety for journalists, as well as the opportunity to receive funds to finance research and the help of professional editing tutorials.
For five months, from April to August 2021, through the most inclusive Journalism Course , journalists will participate in workshops in which they will learn to better identify specialist sources on these topics, will learn theoretical tools to approach coverage and will be able to put this knowledge into practice.
The workshops will include expert voices on the rights of women and LGBTIQ + people, as well as renowned journalists from Latin America, with experience reporting on these issues. They will also participate in various security workshops with the IWMF Security Director to learn how to better protect themselves while reporting.
The final part of the program will promote the realization of journalistic projects with editorial accompaniment of tutorials. Those who participate in the program will have the opportunity to apply for the Journalistic Production Scholarships, which grant around $ 500 to $ 4000 US dollars to finance the realization of their individual or group reports.
These production scholarships will be open to those who complete the More Inclusive Journalism Course in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras or Mexico. This Scholarship is open to journalists who work independently (freelance) as well as to those who work in the media. Priority will be given to journalists who commit to replicating and sharing their learning’s with colleagues and in their workspaces.
Topics on the program include:
- The current landscape of the media and the coverage they do about the problems of women and LGBTIQ + people;
- The language to be used, including appropriate definitions and terminology, as well as good practices;
- An analysis of privileges and prejudices. How do we examine ourselves to ensure that they do not affect our coverage?
- Human rights from a gender perspective and the mechanisms of international law that guarantee them;
- Regional analysis: How are the rights of women and LGBTIQ + people in other Latin American countries?
- Religion and beliefs: their influence on society. Approaches to coverage.
- Physical and digital security for coverage
Criteria
- Have a minimum of two years of experience in journalism.
- Share posts made in the last two years.
- Send two job references.
- In case of working for a medium, present a letter of authorization to participate in the training and activities of the program signed by the medium.
