U.S. Mission to France seeking Applications for Central and Eastern Europe Journalist Fellowship Program

Rest and Refuge Fellowship Program for Journalists

Deadline: 24 June 2019

The Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs of the U.S. Department of State has announced an open competition for public and private non-profit organizations to submit proposals to carry out a program to support independent media in Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia through training, mentoring and skills building in the United States.

The program aims to boost the capacity and sustainability of professional journalists primarily from outside of capitals and citizen-generated media in Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia through a mix of skills building, education, mentoring, and networking activities in the United States for a maximum of four months and a minimum of two months, depending on variables impacting the participants or host entities.  During the course of the exchange, the participants should gain exposure to content production best practices, effective media delivery methods, and audience analytic tools, particularly in the digital space. Program participants will have the opportunity to work at U.S.-based media outlets and improve their professional skills, specifically in ethics and investigative journalism.  It will also provide opportunities for professionals from the region to work with U.S. counterparts to expand their skill set through mentoring that broadens perspectives and builds partnerships across the Atlantic.

The program will help to develop a financially sustainable media sector through organizational and financial management training, advertising sector development, audience research and/or circulation audit capacities, market research, business planning, capital infusion and loans, media industry information exchanges, sponsorships/partnerships and other methods to improve the economic viability of the sector.
