”la Caixa” Foundation launches Health Research Call (Ninth Edition)

Call for Applications: Support to Education and Health Sectors in Eritrea

Deadline: 19-Nov-2025

The ”la Caixa” Foundation has launched the ninth edition of its Call for Biomedical and Health Research Projects, aiming to support outstanding scientific research with strong potential for societal impact.

This initiative is open to proposals in basic, clinical, or translational research that can contribute meaningfully to the advancement of human health.

Research teams are invited to submit proposals in one of five key thematic areas. These include neuroscience, oncology, cardiovascular and associated metabolic diseases, and infectious diseases. Projects focusing on enabling technologies that support any of these four fields are also eligible.

Applicants can choose to submit either individual or consortium-based research projects. Individual projects must come from a single research organization, which may request up to €500,000 in funding. In contrast, research consortium projects must include between two and five research organizations, coordinated by one Host Organization, with the possibility of requesting up to €1,000,000.

Both types of projects may involve non-profit civil society organizations, such as patient associations, as part of their collaborative network. However, established companies are not permitted to participate as cooperating organizations in the funded research activities.

In total, up to €21,500,000 will be allocated to support the selected proposals. While the foundation intends to distribute funds relatively evenly across the thematic areas, final decisions will be based on the quality and unique characteristics of the proposals received.

Before proposals proceed to evaluation, they must pass an eligibility phase to ensure proper format and relevant content. This phase is managed by the Grant Project Office, which verifies compliance with the call’s formal submission requirements. Content eligibility is then assessed using a combination of algorithmic analysis and expert review by two human evaluators, ensuring a rigorous and fair process.

This call represents a major opportunity for research teams to gain significant support for projects with the potential to change lives and advance biomedical science.
