The United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) partnered with the Health Journalists Association of Zimbabwe (HeJAZ) and the National AIDS Council (NAC), has launched the PEPFAR HIV and AIDS Media Awards Competition.
The awards will cover Photo, Print/ Online and Broadcast Journalism categories. Entries are invited from the media fraternity and should be submitted to the PEPFAR Media Awards Adjudication Committee (PMAAC) at the Public Affairs Section.
Rational for Media Awards
- Increase reportage of PEPFAR supported initiatives in Zimbabwe
- Raise community awareness of public health issues
- Promote health seeking behaviors amongst communities
- Increase uptake of health related services such as Antiretroviral therapy
- Impact on society
Award Categories
- Print Journalism: Submissions should have a minimum of 300 and maximum of 1000 words comprising features/articles published in different media such as newspapers, newsletters, magazines and the website;
- Photo Journalism: A minimum of a single photo a pictorial of up to 10 photos and an album of up to 20 photos (published and captioned) should be submitted;
- Broadcast (Television/Radio) Journalism: Broadcast material for submission should have a minimum duration of 1 minute and a maximum of an hour. All broadcast materials should be supported/accompanied by a transcript written in English.
Selection Criteria
- Impact of story on society and adherence to ethical guidelines set in the media code of ethics;
- A story that satisfies the basic tenets of journalism i.e. balance of story, fairness and accuracy;
- Language usage and demonstration of depth of knowledge and research of the subject.
Rules of the Competition
- The entries should have been published/broadcast between October 2015 and October 2016 by a recognized media house or agency or carried on line with a byline of the author;
- The themes of the entries to be submitted for the competition must be in the area of HIV and AIDS;
- Entries can be submitted by individuals or organizations and each submission should not exceed more than five entries;
- Submissions will be reviewed by the PMAAC comprising members selected by, health experts from the U.S. Health Team, representatives from the National AIDS Council (NAC) and the AIDS and TB Unit – Ministry of Health and Child Care (MOHCC), the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe, Harare Polytechnic and a Media Consultant;
- The decision of the PMAAC is final and the winners will be announced and receive their awards as part of the commemoration of World AIDS Day 2016 on December 1, 2016 at a venue to be advised;
- The overall winner will receive a trophy, prize and certificate. Runner ups will be selected from each of the three (3 categories of journalism) and awarded a prize and a certificate;
- The PMAAC reserves the right not to award a prize in any of the categories if the entries do not satisfactorily meet the competition requirements. In such an event, PMAAC may award such an award to deserving entries that may score second or third place in the other categories;
- Entries are invited three (3) categories mentioned above.
