The Core Funding Programme offers vital financial support to regional and local organisations across Northern Ireland that are dedicated to building and sustaining positive community relationships.
Designed to complement existing funding from central and local government, the programme helps organisations deliver initiatives that promote understanding, equality, and social cohesion. With an annual budget of approximately £1.2 million, the programme supports around 30 organisations each year, providing grants that typically range from £20,000 to £80,000, with an average award of £42,000. For the 2025–2026 funding round, an estimated £600,000 has been allocated for new applications.
The programme prioritises projects that demonstrate a strong commitment to improving community relations through intentional, high-quality work. Funded organisations are expected to uphold the principles of equity and equality, human rights, respect for diversity, interdependence, and non-violence. Applicants must show that they have the capacity to deliver meaningful, lasting change in communities and institutions, engaging diverse groups across Northern Ireland in promoting better relationships and shared understanding.
Organisations applying for funding must also illustrate an ability to collaborate effectively with other agencies and groups to advance community relations principles and practices. Proposals that address a clear strategic need or fill a gap in existing community relations efforts are particularly encouraged. In addition to funding, the programme provides guidance to funded organisations and facilitates coordination and knowledge sharing among projects, helping to strengthen the impact of community relations work across the region.
Eligibility is a key consideration in the selection process. The Northern Ireland Community Relations Council (NICRC) assesses each organisation’s legal and financial standing, ensuring applicants are able to operate in Northern Ireland and manage public funds responsibly. Applicants must provide audited and management accounts, evidence of robust financial systems, and a current Community Relations, Good Relations, or Equality Policy. Proposals must also be complete, include all required documentation, and demonstrate that their work plans align with the objectives of the Core Funding Programme.
Given the high demand for this funding, competition is strong, and even well-designed applications may not be successful. However, organisations that can clearly demonstrate their commitment to fostering equitable and inclusive relationships within Northern Ireland’s communities will find the Core Funding Programme an important opportunity to sustain and expand their impact. Through this initiative, NICRC continues to invest in the long-term vision of a peaceful, respectful, and cohesive society.
