BJA Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Program in US

Regional Children’s Advocacy Centers Program (United States)

Deadline: 27-Oct-2025

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) has announced the availability of $83 million in funding under the STOP School Violence Act of 2018, a program designed to strengthen safety and security in schools across the United States.

The initiative provides resources for training, threat prevention, and the development of systems that help schools respond quickly to potential violence.

The program will fund training to prevent violence against others and self, targeting school personnel, law enforcement officers, and students. It will also support the creation and operation of anonymous reporting tools such as mobile apps, hotlines, and websites where threats of school violence can be reported confidentially. Another priority is the development and deployment of school threat assessment and intervention teams, working in coordination with law enforcement to identify risks early. Training for school officials in responding to mental health crises will also be funded, ensuring that students in distress receive timely support.

Funding is offered under two categories. Category 1 supports state governments and public higher education institutions to implement comprehensive school safety measures. Category 2 supports local governments, federally recognized tribal governments, nonprofits, school districts, and both private and charter schools to deliver similar initiatives at the community level. Together, these categories aim to provide broad coverage and allow for tailored safety programs that address both statewide and local needs.

Applicants are encouraged to align their proposals with the wider goals of the Department of Justice. Priority will be given to projects that directly support law enforcement operations, combat violent crime, protect American children, support services for citizens, and aid victims of trafficking and sexual assault. By tying prevention strategies to these priorities, applicants can strengthen their proposals and ensure they contribute to broader national safety objectives.

For Category 1, BJA expects to make approximately 10 awards, with ceilings of up to $2 million each, and a performance period of 36 months starting October 1, 2025. Category 2 anticipates 69 awards, with ceilings of up to $1 million each, also for 36-month performance periods beginning on the same date.

Eligible applicants vary by category. States and public higher education institutions are eligible for Category 1. Category 2 is open to counties, cities, townships, school districts, private and charter schools, nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status, and federally recognized tribal governments.

Through these investments, the STOP School Violence Program seeks to equip schools and communities with the tools needed to prevent violence, protect children, and create safer environments for learning.
